The Mass Effect trilogy are my fave games of the last generation.
If you like action RPGs and/or epic space SF then you really should give them a go

I don't know... Only if I can date who I want to date from the get-go; and if Polyamory is a thing in the online universe... (Again, I base my character on Captain Jack Harkness)
-In Mass Effect 1 I really wanted to date the Quarren Engineer (Tali), but I was shoehorned into a 3 way romance with the Human Soldier (Ashley) and the Asari Scientist (Liara)... This ended in flames because Ashley violently opposed any kind of multi-partner affair. (Liara and I were both amicable to the arrangement however!) By the time Mass Effect 2 rolled around, my inherent sense of loyalty kept me with Liara despite my original intentions with Tali... *ugh*
The idea of having in-game romances with NPCs is something that is so tertiary to the scope of the game, that if we see it at all, it will be muuuuch later; and probably only as a PC release. (I hope that I am wrong!)
-In the mean time I suppose there could be romantic roleplaying between CMDRs, but that would require a dedicated RP sub-forum on a site like this in order to keep it separate from the anti-RPG elements of the forum. (I have seen this work in Warhammer 40k sites for example) That might be interesting if the Devs/Mods allowed it.

I played through mass effect and before Elite, it was the best space opera avaliable. Honestly it was planetary romance, pun partially intended.
I put a lot of work into Tali in the first(best) ME. Ended up with Jax in the second and never finished the connection with Tali in the third. I liked the Geth too much to erase them all, and Legion was my buddy. It really made an impact in the ending knowing what could have been...
Really hoping to play as a Quarian in ME4.
As to Npc companions in Elite, id love to have a co-pilot, or an engineer or a science officer aboard. With friendship quests and romance and all that rp goodness. Skyrim managed this well, if not to the depth of ME. My Shepard and Garrus were pretty good friends by the end of the series, id love to have somthing similar. Maybe hire a navigator for exploration and after so much time out under the big sky they could choose to stay on. We could have a whole Firefly crew eventually! Sry got a bit excited by npc's it happens somtimes.
I understand that this is not even on the radar for the game, but they have said we will.get up out of the pilots seat one day, and after that who knows what we will be able to do.

Now that I think of it, I always sent my female character in the first Dragon Age into the brothel. Always.
