I know I'm not alone in being desperate to try out Elite Dangerous on the Occulus Rift.

I was wondering about the possibility of organising an event for this purpose.

If we could book a venue (for me it would need to be London based) and if one or two people with a working Occulus rig would be willing to bring it along then I'd be willing to try and organise this.

So, would anyone with such a setup be willing to take part in this? (they'd get a warm glow, free drinks and maybe even money).

Alternatively, does anyone have any connections with Occulus (or FD) themselves? Would they be willing to sponsor such an event? I'm sure people would be willing to pay a small fee to attend and it would be a great marketing opportunity. Hell, from what I've heard of the Occulus experience, if they had pre-order contracts available to sign on the way out, that alone would probably pay for the event.

Also, does anyone know of any suitable venues? (I went to a similar CCP hosted Eve:Valkyrie event last year which was a huge success. CCP even paid for the bar tab! I'm not suggesting FD should do the same but, well, just sayin').

Daily bump!

Sorry, I'll only do this for a week ... just can't quite believe people wouldn't be interested in this, figured maybe this thread is getting lost amongst all the griping :)

It's Birmingham based since Birmingham is a little easier for those in 'the north' to get to, but still south enough that those from 'the south' don't feel too afraid....

I'm still trying to persuade a collegue up north who has a DK2 to accidentally leave it lying around when next he visits.. :)

If you miss the EliteMeet, you could come to Lavecon - which last year took over 200 of us (including guests) and covered everything from Oculus Rift, to dev talks, publishers of the books, EDTracker, an enormous raffle of things money can't buy, the LAN room, beer and much more besides.

I was introduced to OR there and loved it.

I'll be in London in march till the end of summer, will have my DK2 with me, cant bring my Rig as it's based out here near Dubai. I can bring my BKgamer too.

Edit - I may actually bring my rig with me and buy a new HOTAS setup when I get to London

Please don't. If people don't reply, the thread should die off. Please don't continually bump it.

I had my first go on the Rift at a small Elite gathering in Manchester ... I think it was called E-leet-Meat ... can't for the life of me remember who's idea it was to have it in Manchester in the middle of nowhere, but I do remember the venue was "across the road" from where we were staying :p
The short go I had was enough to make me shut up and change my opinion of it.

for the record it was my idea to have EliteMeet in Manchester and it was an event made special by everyone who went. Thank you Darren, Fozza, Grant, Kerrash and everyone.

I voted not interested....... because I already have a DK2

however I will say for anyone on the fence who has not tried DK2 VR, it is an experience unmatched with any other gaming peripheral imo, and well worth your time if you get the chance to check out.

If you do organise something, don't forget you will need a half decent internet connection :)

Personally I'd approach the developer.

Well, if anyone is near Aberdeen any time, you're welcome to try out my DK2.

I'm also happy to take one to the Birmingham Elite Meet at the end of March - I can't take a machine on the flight down for luggage reasons, but if someone can bring a machine, I'll pop the DK2 in the bag.

Yay! Rum and cokes for the win? :D

Does anyone want to set up a couple computers with DK2's in Auckland, New Zealand?

Us folk on the other side of the planet would like to try as well..

I'm south London based and would be very happy to bring the oculus along if a meet was organised . I will say though be careful what you wish for though lol. I don't enjoy the game the same way when not on the oculus , it really does change the look and feel of the game for me and now when I play on my laptop when working away it's feels very flat and non immersive. For me , showing soneone the oculus with the usual demos of roller coasters , haunted houses etc is fun but I always leave elite to the last demo and I can't tell you how many people are speechless at how cool it is with that game . I've been in and out of hospital last year and got chatting with a doctor who was a gamer . Surprisingly He had never heard of the oculus and so I invited him round to try . When he arrived he said I'll only stay for half an hour as I'm sure you've got things to be getting on with . Once the ocukus was placed on his head , 5 hours later he was still playing lol .. So back to the op, be very happy to meet up If something's organised ..

Cool, thanks for the offer ... I might just take you up on it!

Re: careful what you wish for, I hear you absolutely and am in two minds about doing this to myself (what's worse is that my PC wouldn't have a hope in hell of driving the Occulus so it's gonna be expensive if I fall in love with it and can't do without!).

To be honest, ever since I tried the Occulus with Eve:Valkyrie I've pretty much been thinking that when the consumer Occulus comes out I'll just walk into PC World and buy one. I can see that it's a total game changer.

Perhaps you can answer one question which is of immediate concern (and one reason for me wanting to try one with Elite first). I need reading glasses these days. How does the Elite/Occulus setup cope with this re: being able to read all the HUD text? Do I need to wear glasses under the Occulus (which I tried at the Eve event but found uncomfortable) or is there an adjustable diopter adjustment of some sort?

It comes with different lenses for people with glasses so maybe they weren't fitted . Tbh I don't know what the difference is in the lenses . You will read a lot of stuff about the text being blurry anyways for people with near perfect vision , it really is something you can live with as you can still read stuff , it just takes a minor focus on stuff and the upside of feeling like you're actually in the ship is worth any slight blur on text believe me .

Having said all that , my guess is from what I've read there's will be the consumer version out in December 2015 and with the new lenses and new resolution , it should be even better and I think worth waiting for . Who knows might even be cheaper than he development kit !
