Elite Dangerous on Bootcamp thread.

Hi,

My 2008 MacPro is getting a bit long in the tooth and won't Bootcamp for various reasons.

So I'm looking to buy a fully spec'd iMac 21.5" 2013 with upgraded i7, 16GB RAM and 1TB Fusion. I'm fully confident that will Bootcamp Windows 7 x64 OK. It should also tide me over until the native Mac version arrives and then I can make my choice.

I'm also intending to get a Saitek X52 Pro to play with, but I see that they don't always play nicely with USB 3. And as it's a Mac, it's not like you can tweak the BIOS or throw a PCI card in.

Has anyone out there got a USB 3 based Mac, Bootcamped, and is running an X52? Just want to make sure I'm not considering spending cash on something that likely won't work.

Thanks in advance,

J

Can't lend any comment on the x52 (i have been to-ing and fro-ing on this) but i have an late 2013 imac (i5 3.4ghz 8gb ram 27") and the thing runs awesomely...i've had very few instances of lag (in SC in a densely populated system) but apart from that it looks awesome and beautiful on that 27" panel.

I'm currently using a PS4 dualshock controller which is actually playing really nicely. i want to do the headtracking thing with the inbuilt isight camera as well as the voice attack plugin. I read some reviews on the X52 on amazon from a few peeps that after using the x52, they went back to the gamepad...i know its not really PC worthy to use a game pad, but the great thing about the PS4 pad is the build in trackpad to use as a mouse. i'm enjoying it so far...no real limitations that i've experienced and if i don't have enough buttons, then i can map them to a voice command (landing gear, scoops etc)

Thanks, am pretty sure the iMac will be zippy enough now. One less thing to worry about.

Hopefully with the latest Win (Bootcamp) drivers, Saitek drivers and a USB 2 hub/extension cable I can fudge the X52 to be OK. I've used a PS3 controller playing Oolite, but as a flightsim player of years past I'm looking forward to using a stick again. Just got to try and configure and remember all the buttons...

For reference in case anyone else stumbles upon this, the X52 Pro does not work with a (USB 3 only) 2013 iMac. Or at least, it didn't work for me, lots of lockups and BSoDs.

However a normal (non-Pro) X52 works fine!

Is it worth playing in Bootcamp

Hi commanders.

As a Mac user i'm awaiting news for the Mac version. In the meantime is it worth playing in Bootcamp? if so Win 7 / 8 /10 ?. I'm on a Retina Mac Pro at the moment - and getting a little frustrated.

Ok - I could get a PC for my flight sims ... but

I don't understand the problem. I'm also bootcamping, playing E:D with a Saitek X55 HOTAS. Works well. I'll be happier with a native OS X client, but this will do for now.

If I were in your situation I'd at least try Windows 10 - it's going to be "free" for some time to come and will probably see you through to the Mac version without spending any money! ;) There are evaluation versions of 8 I believe, but only for a month IIRC?

3 months. That's what I'm using, and hoping the mac version comes out before the trial expires (but honestly I'm not very optimistic).

For you people stating that the X52 Pro does not work on USB 3.0 ports of a Mac, are you using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? I've been told by someone that has a iMac 5K with USB 3.0 ports and uses a USB 2.0 hub with Windows 8.1, and it works fine. Is this USB 3.0 issue isolated to Windows 7 only? Anybody know?

I went for the fully specced Mac Mini as I already had a Thunderbolt Display (and couldn't justify the 2.5k to replace my MacBook Pro when I've not taken it off my desk in a year) and I have occasional issues with the X52 and the USB 3 ports.

1. win7 won't boot with it plugged in.
2. Any key map programming done in the mad cats software doesn't work in game - doesn't bother me as game bindings are quite good.
3. Windows joystick control panel locks up sometimes, again not really an issue.
4. Every few days the drivers go odd, MFD stops lighting up, systray icon disappears...but it still works fine in ED. I just re-run driver install, takes 5 mins.

2011 Macbook Pro Elite Dangerous performance (Bootcamp)

Before buying Elite I couldn't find any info on how the 2011 Macbook pro would perform, so i'm posting it here for anyone else that might be wondering, or to compare it to other similar macs.

Specs:
2.2Ghz i7
8Gb Ram
1Gb Radeon HD 6750M graphics
7200rpm drive
Resolution is 1680 x 1050

At all lowest settings it is very playable and looks fine! it run around 35fps in space, and around 20 in stations with quite a bit of audio stuttering.

ED on Window Bootcamp on a Mac?

I only own a Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2012. In addition to MacOs, I have Windows on it, with bootcamp, and a Nvidia Geforce GT650M. I saw the specs for the game, and it seems it matches. It should run, but I am curious whether anyone is running it on Windows Bootcamp on a Mac?

Thanks

Edit: Thanks for the mod who moved my post here. That's impressive customer service there!

Ceodryn, I am running ED on Bootcamp with an ancient 2011 imac/coreI7 on win8 - runs like a charm with medium graphic settings. With lowest settings, it even runs acceptable on an 2013 i5 Mini with Intel Graphics. And it does run on my MBP 2009 DualCore 3GHz with dual Graphics Adapter.

I recommend you go for it.

Ok so reading this thread, it seems bootcamp works fine for ED. However the issue seems to be with controllers, particularly Saitek. I have Windows 7 on bootcamp, using either Paralell Desktop to access bootcamp, or probably for ED, booting directly into Windows.

Which controllers will not work with Windows 7? Is that only the Saitek X52 pro? What about other brands?

Thanks
