Elite Dangerous on Switch - A thing?

Is that the "other platform" DBOBE was referring to at Pax?

In the extremely unlikely event of that happening, I would buy a Switch in a heartbeat. Hell, I'm probably going to buy one anyway for the likes of Zelda, Splatoon, Mario etc... But ED on it would be great.

Same here, so long as I could transfer everything from PC. The Switch would beat taking a laptop on the road in a heartbeat!

I can't see it,

The Switch hardware is quite good, but unless the Nvidia Tegra-based GPU is better than it appears to be, I don't think it has the muscle to run the game effectively - or at least not at high graphical fidelity - and given how the original PC versions were downgraded to accommodate the Xbox's limitations (unconfirmed, this is and always has been supposition, but I firmly believe it - regardless how often it's denied), Frontier would want parity across all platforms - and I don't think the Switch is capable of such.

Given the Switch only has 256 shaders, and only 4Gb of system memory... I'm afraid the only version of Elite it could run might be First Encounters :D

Will never happen.

The game struggles to run at a consistent 30fps on the Xbox One. The Switch isn't remotely close to having the same processing power as the XB1, so it simply comes down to the Nintendo system being too underpowered to run a game like Elite Dangerous. Even at 30fps.

If Nintendo had done the right thing and went with the Tegra X2 Pascal instead of the aging X1 from 2015, the Switch's future would look a heck of a lot brighter than it does.

You are wrong about the xbox and downgrades. The only thing that got slightly downgraded where asteroid belts, but that was to nothing to do with xbox. They have different rendering paths as has already been explained by fdev. Downgrading on PC won't do an iota of difference to the xbox version.

Also the PC version is already so much better then the xbox version that the view just doesn't hold any water.

As to the switch I agree. Just not enough GPU power. What is it with Nintendo and always bringing out consoles which are so under powered. The switch doesn't look that much better then the last Nintendo console.

Nintendo consoles have always been underpowered compared to the competition (at least, they have since the N64). However, the games are excellent, especially when friends are over - this is where Nintendo have always excelled. The Wii was awful when you look at the specifications. But as a games machine? It was superb. I believe the Switch also has some unique and excellent features that should see it do ok.

I'll be getting a Switch at some point. But E: D needs a PC to run, in my opinion. I did buy the Xbox One version, but never play it as my PC is significantly faster and has the HOTAS attached. When you get used to that, playing with controllers just isn't the same.

The Switch takes the "Under Powered Console" thing to an entirely different level. It can't even run Nintendo's own Flagship IP for the system, Zelda BOTW at a locked 30fps without dropping frames and loosing frame time all over the place.

I will never understand why this company always chooses to put themselves behind the 8 Ball like this every single generation. Since it has now been confirmed that the Switch is running an "unmodified" Tegra X1, I am crossing the system off my list. This will be the first Nintendo console I am passing on. Just can't justify the expense for a system that delivers so little performance yet is priced higher than both the PS4 and the Xbox One S.

I'm playing BOTW on my WiiU and am getting similar performance to the Switch anyway. Once I am done with that awesome game (GOTY EASY), that will close the book on my 30+ years with Nintendo.

The Switch's lackluster performance and capabilities was the last straw for me.

They may be selling like hot cakes right now, but these things are going to be flooding the used market in 18 months, once it becomes clear to everyone that third party support is not going to be on the same level as the PS4 and XB1, and Nintendo isn't going to be able to keep enough of their own games in the pipeline to hold interest with your average gamer.

Some things never change.

Nintendo are sickeningly family-friendly, and as such, they simply wouldn't sell as many consoles if they were the same box as the competition, without the games that SELL consoles, like GTA and *ick* CoD (although I think, finally, that bubble has burst).

So they try to bring out cheaper, innovative (read: gimmicky) consoles. The Wii, the Wii-U and now the Switch. All were utterly underpowered, mobile phone-level tech, but with unique (odd) features. And look at how well things worked. The Wii was the most sought-after Xmas 'thing' when it came out - it's rarity was the stuff of legends. The Wii-U was unsuccessful, primarily because it wasn't very good at what it tried to be.

The Switch, however, is a very clever bit of kit, which hopefully will have some great game support. But it isn't really a competitor for the other players, it's more like an optional extra.

I almost believe Nintendo will work on a complete, self contained VR console. Possibly called WiiVii. And it will sell millions.

GameCube! It was at least comparable to the other consoles at the time... it will never come out on the switch...

Oh that's some old school gear we're talking about now :D That was back when Nintendo were a lot more relevant in the West. They still are... but their values interfere with their desirability with a lot of potential customers - and that's exactly how they like it.

I never owned a gamecube, I was all Amiga and PC. But if I were to own a console, a Gamecube it would have been!

I am Alpha testing Elite:Not So Dangerous at the mo. On the switch.

Great interpretation! Chasing space mushrooms, collecting and evolving Engineers, secret cheat combos, plus fairies, Bowzer in a Cobra and of course Mario in a Corvette!

It's great!
