Elite Dangerous... Online, but... alone...

Hey there commanders :)

Not a moaning post, just to make sure to get it started right :)

I don't knwo bout all of you, but I like online games. WHy? Cause you don't feel alone, you are not alone.

Now, here's where it starts to get, funny... I love MMORPGS in general, but I often come along with one character, and not really going into guilds, groups or what ever.

Here in ED, I like that ONLINE idea too... sometimes I cross the wings of other commanders, and it's even more pleasing as I'm a bit far of the starter positions. Now the further I travel, the happier I get when I see in supercruise mode a non-filled-square around (real player)... I just want to open the windshields and scream out HELLO COMMANDER!!!!!!!

Now, I don't bother to play more with others, I like it 'alone', must be a lone ranger somehow! And Elite Dangerous is just giving me that sense of gaming, "online but alone", as there's no grouping, no real goal of playing together, it's just as in real world: I'm surrounded, but "alone" (+/-, hope you understand what I mean) ^^.

Yeah, sorry, nothing more, just wanted to share my thoughts about, about "ONLINE BUT ALONE" :)

I play the exact same way! It's nice to be able to find a busy system when you want to interact with other pilots, but it's also nice to go free room and not be grieved by higher level players all the time! I know exactly what you mean!!

Yeah, that's a major complaint. Honestly, for all the back-and-forth I hear about PvP, pirates, etc, I essentially never see other players. The game does not really encourage you to play with others. I think overall it mainly reflects a total lack of actual non-procedurally generated content. Even when wings are implemented, there is still a lack of group content to make playing with others a worthwhile experience.

At the moment, Elite: Dangerous is as much a MMO as one of the Assassin's Creed games. The game is fun, but the multiplayer feels, for the most part, unnecessary and tacked on. Which is too bad, because there's a lot of potential. For example, grouping up with some friends to take down a Federation capital ship (which can not currently be destroyed) and its fighter escorts.

OP I get you, and feel much the same way, mmo usually conjures up the idea of hordes of players all running here and there at top speed, as if on some urgent corporate errand. A chat box filled with racial abuse and/or sexual content, punctuated by goldsellers and other spammers making their pitch. The peace and often solitude of ED with its rare encounters with fellow members humankind is somehow refreshing to me. I have often found the "idea" of the mmo sounds wonderful, but the actual realisation in game is poor.

I mean to edit in this post.. but apparently I can't edit my posts?

Anyway: I mean this was a major complaint of mine. I didn't mean this as an attack on anyone that prefers to play alone. I think if you want to play alone, more power to you. No one should tell you what you should or shouldn't do with the game you bought. I just would like to see more content for those who want to play with friends. I, personally, do not find the current multiplayer functions to really be fitting the game's potential.
