Elite Dangerous - PC/MAC/Console possible benefits?

Okay, let's get the first thing out of the way.

Console gamers = morons, kiddies, any other insult you care to think of is just not the case.

I play more on my Xbox One than I do on my PC, which is a capable gaming rig. I'm sure I'm not alone. We're all gamers that like to play games. Elite fits that category. Anyone blithering on about how the game is going to be dumbed down and that consoles are for children needs to seriously pipe down because it's a completely ridiculous statement. There are idiots and immature people on all platforms, because in general, people suck.

With that out of the way....

I love Elite on my PC, and I couldn't play without a HOTAS, so I'm hoping that Saitek or MS will go all out and release a decent flight stick for the Xbox.

One thing I did wonder, was that as it's now coming to the Xbox, whether FD have made a deal with MS to use their Azure servers in replacement of the Amazon(?) ones?

I believe part of MS' mantra is to offer those servers to devs for free (or at least a very reduced cost) - could this lead to a massive upgrade for the game? Instead of "instances" using only P2P, would it be possible to connect to ready to go Azure servers, and would that mean that:

a) Cross play could be a legitimate reality?
b) More players per "instance" due to the increased server capacity?
c) Cloud based saves going between both PC/Xbox/MAC?

I'm sure someone more technical could answer this, but thought it might be a good idea to discuss it.

Have at it!

it'll more than likely be separate, there is a reason why console gamers and pc gamers don't do much cross platform, and why most attempts at cross platform vanish like a fart in the wind.

it comes down to the control scheme, a mouse is just much more precise than a control pad analogue sticks, and the keyboard has more buttons. personally i don't mind many console games infact certain games play much better with a controller (fps not included), but i have noticed that lots of deeper games don't make it to consoles due to the inferior control scheme. its mostly apparent in things like the non existent RTS's and first person shooters with no lean function.

joysticks vs controllers though, not sure, essentially the same thing, i can play elite perfectly fine with a kb/mouse, i wouldn't get anything from a joystick that i can't already do with toggleable flight assist. if the control scheme isn't a problem then I don't see why they couldn't do cross platform, but every instance of crossplatform i've followed has had it not follow through. mainly due entirely by pc gamers crushing console gamers.

its a little old now but i find it relevant in every discussion on cross platform http://www.rahulsood.com/2010/07/console-gamers-get-killed-against-pc.html

A lot of us are playing Elite with XBOX controllers, they are very well suited to the game. I borrowed a friends X-52 but I still prefer the XBOX controller.

Xbox is going to have it's own space. Players on Xbox won't see players on PC/Mac (notice the spelling here.. MAC is incorrect). Allegedly the background sim will take everyone into account and adjust accordingly however.

Say what.. o_O

Sounds crazy, but it's true. The X-52 was brilliant for DCS A-10 but I preferred the XBOX controller for Elite. There's a lot of sitting back and not doing very much in Elite and the casual controller suits it better, I can sit back and relax with it. It's also perfectly good enough for this kind of control input, it's only FPS games where it really falls short for me.

Having said that I don't really think the game suits the average console player. I have both. I have a PC for slower, more mature games like Elite and DCS. There's a reason not many games like that succeed on consoles, and that's because the "in depth" gamers are still all attracted to the PC.
