so no old save to fall back on at all?

I'm 2k short of the insurance on yet another lost cobra and the previous 2 musta had 50k+ worth of stock too - is there no way to go back to a previous save? cos i'm bored of starting from scratch... back to 4 cargo then that tedious freighter for 3 days - cant even grab your old guns for a decent cashroll ...meh.

There has to be a way of putting ships aside, or rezing a save from the last dock with your stock... this is too frustrating otherwise. I musta lost well over 180K so far to station warpage in smaller ships during multiplay too - silly to have no recovery method.

The current "insurance" method doesn't work anything like the real world and I hope they change it, but meanwhile there is a way to avoid the frustration. Check out this web tool:

http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/Loadout

Enter your ship model, and the weapons and modules you've bought. Then look at the Insurance field calculated at the lower left. Keep that much cash on hand before you leave a station, and you'll always be able to recover your old ship and loadout (but not any cargo you're carrying). I always keep a bit more reserved, just to stay on the safe side, because ship and weapon prices can vary at different stations.

The game really, really needs something like this on one of the in-game menus before release, or it's going to generate enormous negative reaction from new players.

ohright - that doesn't actually give me access to previous saves though...
well i'm just gonna pirate this sidewinders till death or Viper then cos i really can't be bothered with countless hours of tedious trading when i should be playing around with a cobra n learning how to get combat effective in one, cos i've bought 1 n rezed it about 5 times it should be permanent regardless considering the potential losses with a 36 bay and the cost of c4 weapons...

.... and this is my first time back to elite since the C64 version. i played way past deadly but didn't know about sending anything off for my elite title, so as a consolation prize, how's about a free Cobra every time my own stupidity leaves me another 250K out n back to the kiddy table?

lol and throw in that wireframe paintjob too :p

I really dont like the idea of the game 'going on without you'. Surely this will mean you might miss loads of in game events? For example you might see a brilliant mission that you want to play in the next session but by the time you get back to the game it will have long gone?
The game has single player offline mode option, so you don't have to join the multiplayer. You can't expect thousands of other players to not log into the game because they have to wait for you to come online so you don't "miss" anything.

Even in single player you will miss things, though. There are 400 billion star systems, and you can only be in one at a time. You'll constantly be missing out on missions and events in the systems you're not in, even if you play 24/7.

The answer to your problem is not to get too attached to your ship, it will all get wiped before the game starts.

Ummm no it doesn't, it's entirely online. It has a solo online mode though, you still have to be connected in order to get market data.
Single player offline was confirmed during the Kickstarter. You may need to login during installation, but after that the market will run locally if you choose to play in this mode. You won't need to connect to anything. Not to be confused with single player online mode.

You said it as though it was already and option. It has been confirmed yes, but as far as I'm aware they haven't said it will be in for release. Though I'm always prepared to be wrong ;)

There are no "previous saves". Keep enough spare money to buy back your ship. This game will teach you to be careful, and not to take huge risks.

I like that the game makes me take it seriously.

About to give up playing ED. I can stand losing my ship when I try and bite off more than I can chew, but losing all of my cash at the same time is a bit much! This has happened to me twice!

Where is game progress saved? is it saved on the ED Servers? if so is the data for the 10,000s of players progress backed up in case of system failure?

ED servers have you saves. And yes, they have backups (apparently, considering how they've managed to fix borked saves pretty ASAP for people in the past).

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I would pay a LOT to have access to my previous saves right now. 6 tonnes of beryllium in the hold, on my way to make a fortune (at my n00b level it counts as a fortune), I stopped at a station along the way to refuel, having been burned once to often by running out of fuel and having to self-boom. Fueled and ready, I take off - and immediately ram into the side of the gate at maximum speed. Out in a blaze of stupid. I think my body is rebelling against being made to sit here all day playing this game, and my left hand just decided to slam the throttle to max AND hit the boost.

I said some very bad words indeed.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, I was wondering if i must save and exit before the game saves my progress. With my fuel scoop and making sure a suitable star is close in range for scooping I am constantly on the move exploring. I reasoned that automatic saves where only made when docked at a station. From this thread I am assuming saves are made when you enter hyperspace or supercruise to hyperspace. This serves as a protection against server issues and the mishaps of an online connection. As an explorer, I go from supercruise to hyperspace mostly and hardly to normal space to dock at a station so I am wondering when in particular a save is made. Or do I have to regularly save and exit while anywere in space without ever docking at a station to ensure I start from my last jump if unnexpectedly i got disconnected.

Additionally, I reasoned that the save that will be loaded when your ship is destroyed is the save you made in your last station. So also I wondered, if I save and exit somewhere in space and then get back into the game after that, and then my ship gets destroyed, will the game load the last save and exit you made yourself or will it load the save the server made on stations. must be the one on the station as if not, it will be an exploit because a pilot can save and exit, enter combat and if he is not successful, reloads the last save and exit he made. Hence, almost an offline game where you can save and load anytime. This in turn means that no matter how long i have been exploring without a station, if i get my ship destroyed, I will loose all the progress I made and start again from the last station i docked at, which could be 100s or even 1000s of light years away. But all those heat damage you get from fuel scooping will eventually needs to be repaired.

Regarding the quoted post, having access to your previous save is exploitable and will remove the excitment of the game making it too easy. Paying for a previous save is like the Plex system in EVE. Yes we all have real lives to live but I do not find it fun or exciting in playing a game where it is easy to amass "virtual" wealth with real cash. You might say you have lost all those hours you put in as if it was real work with no pay. If you are willing to spare those hours for recreational purposes, you should not take anything virtual too seriously as in the end it is just a game. Enjoy the thrill and tell us about it so we can all laugh about it, well almost, it is a game. It is not tragedy in the real sense, it is the excitment of experiencing the unknown and unexpected.

Thanks
