Elite Dangerous store now appears to want a Steam account when I never had a Steam account for previous paint purchases

Noticed that myself this morning. Anyway, click Buy at the top of the page. Scroll down and on the right is an option to browse the store. Then under the Games tab there is the option to buy it from Frontier. Well I assume it's Frontier .
Kind of got stuck, with no option but to create an account to login to Steam...but, it seems my mistake was using the Launcher to access the store since:

Seems to be working ok.
Appreciate the help in any case, since even if it didn't solve my problem, it did get me to look at a little closer

Yeah I just tried that now and I seem to get some sort of permission error as it tries to connect to:
