General Elite Dangerous: Suggestions from the Community

Dear Elite Dangerous Development Team,

My name is Samir, a content creator from Kazakhstan. I produce a YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/@RIMASBRO, focused on gaming reviews and playthroughs. Elite Dangerous is a title I feature regularly, and I am writing to you today with several suggestions to improve the gameplay experience for both new and veteran players.

  1. Ship Interior Accessibility:
Allowing players to walk around their ships would significantly enhance immersion and provide a welcome change of pace, especially for explorers on long expeditions. The ability to explore the interior of one's vessel and interact with its various components would create a deeper sense of connection with the ship and the game world.

  1. NPC Crewmates:
While Elite Dangerous excels as a space flight simulation, the addition of NPC crew members could offer a valuable layer of assistance and reduce the burden of repetitive tasks. These crewmates could be hired to perform specific duties, such as navigation, combat support, or research assistance, freeing the player to focus on other aspects of gameplay.

Alternatively, a more sophisticated autopilot system capable of independently plotting complex routes and managing basic ship functions would be a welcome addition for many players.

Community Suggestions:

In addition to my own suggestions, I have gathered feedback from my community, and I believe the following ideas have considerable merit:

  • Dynamic Economy: A more responsive and interconnected economy, featuring dynamic supply and demand chains, scarcity of resources, and a tangible impact on colonized systems, would greatly enrich the gameplay experience.
  • Player-Organized Teams: The ability to form player-organized teams to undertake missions collaboratively would foster a stronger sense of community and provide new avenues for cooperation.
  • Extravehicular Activity and Ship Repair: The ability to perform spacewalks and conduct external ship repairs would add a new dimension of realism and challenge to the game.
  • VR Support for Odyssey: Expanding VR support to include the Odyssey expansion would provide unparalleled immersion for players with VR capabilities.
  • In-Game INARA Integration: Integrating features from the popular third-party tool INARA, such as detailed profile statistics and an in-game search function for commodities and equipment, would enhance the user experience and streamline gameplay.
  • Planetary Fauna: Introducing diverse and potentially hostile fauna to planetary surfaces would create new challenges and opportunities for exploration.
  • Player Contracts: A system for players to create and accept contracts from each other would foster a dynamic player-driven economy and provide new gameplay opportunities.
  • Enhanced Cooperative Gameplay: Expanding the number of missions designed for cooperative play would encourage teamwork and create a more engaging multiplayer experience.
  • Ship Interiors and Advanced Autopilot: Introducing detailed ship interiors and a more robust autopilot system would enhance player comfort and reduce the tedium of long journeys.
  • Player-Driven Market, Ship Rental, and Sales: Implementing a player-driven marketplace for ships, modules, and other commodities, along with options for renting and leasing vessels, would create a more dynamic and engaging economic system.
  • Player Specializations and Resource Refinement: Introducing specialized roles for players, such as miners, traders, or explorers, along with a deeper resource refinement system, would encourage diverse playstyles and create new economic opportunities.
  • Exploration and Reconnaissance Rewards: Providing unique and valuable rewards for exploration and reconnaissance activities would incentivize players to venture into the unknown and contribute to the galactic map.
  • Improved Large Ship Handling: Refining the flight mechanics of larger ships would make them more enjoyable to fly and increase their tactical viability.
  • NPC Pilot Hiring for Trade and Mining: The ability to hire NPC pilots to manage trade and mining operations would create new avenues for passive income and allow players to focus on other activities.
  • Abandoned Ship Exploration and Boarding: Allowing players to explore abandoned ships and engage in boarding actions would create new opportunities for adventure and combat.
  • Increased Celestial Body Variety: Introducing new types of celestial objects, such as comets, rogue asteroids, and unique black hole systems, would further enhance the diversity and wonder of the galaxy.
  • Atmospheric Planets with Dynamic Weather: The addition of atmospheric planets with dynamic weather systems would create a more immersive and visually stunning universe.
  • Improved Ground Bases and Reduced Grind: Enhancing the functionality and customization options for ground bases, along with reducing the grind associated with certain activities, would improve the overall gameplay experience.
  • Unique Stations and Locations: Introducing more unique stations and locations throughout the galaxy would enhance exploration and provide players with new and interesting places to visit.
  • Powerplay Accessibility: Allowing players to participate in Powerplay activities outside of civilized space would create new opportunities for those who prefer to operate on the fringes of the galaxy.
  • Remote Carrier Management: Providing options for remote management of fleet carriers, such as fuel transfer and repair, would reduce the need for tedious manual operations.
  • Streamlined Mission Structure: Introducing more streamlined mission structures, including non-returnable missions in Odyssey, would create a more dynamic and engaging gameplay loop.
  • Multicrew Roles: Expanding and refining the roles and responsibilities within multicrew ships would create a more immersive and cooperative experience.
  • Expanded Crafting System: Introducing new crafting recipes and materials would provide players with more options for customizing their ships and equipment.
  • Ongoing Odyssey Development: Continued development and refinement of the Odyssey expansion, including bug fixes and new content, is crucial for the long-term health of the game.
  • Interface Customization: Providing options for customizing the interface, including color schemes and HUD elements, would allow players to personalize their experience.
  • Enhanced AI and Ground Combat: Improving the AI of both enemy NPCs and ground forces, along with expanding the variety and customization options for ground combat weapons, would create more challenging and engaging combat encounters.
  • Social Hubs and ARX: Introducing dedicated social hubs, such as bars or cantinas, and increasing the ARX limit would foster greater social interaction and provide more opportunities for player expression.
  • Fleet Carrier Control: Allowing players to pilot their fleet carriers like regular ships would unlock new gameplay possibilities and strategic options.
  • Realistic Orbital Mechanics: Introducing more realistic orbital mechanics would enhance the sense of immersion and create new challenges for navigation and combat.
  • Advanced Autopilot Features: Improving the autopilot system with advanced features, such as automatic obstacle avoidance and more sophisticated route plotting, would increase its utility and reliability.
  • Narrative Content and Events: Expanding the narrative content of the game, including new story missions and seasonal events, would provide players with more engaging experiences and deepen their connection to the game world.
  • Background Simulation Refinement: Refining the background simulation (BGS) to create a more dynamic and impactful player experience, particularly in Open play, would enhance the sense of a living, breathing galaxy.
  • Enhanced Wing Functionality: Improving wing functionality, including increased player limits and the ability for wing members to pilot each other's ships, would create new opportunities for cooperative gameplay.
  • EVA Suit Enhancements: Adding new tools and capabilities to the EVA suit, such as repair modules and sample collection tools, would enhance the spacewalk experience and provide new avenues for exploration.
  • Mining Improvements: Increasing the profitability and variety of mining activities would make it a more attractive and rewarding career path.
  • Anti-Griefing and Piracy Balancing: Implementing more effective anti-griefing measures while ensuring piracy remains a viable and engaging gameplay element is crucial. This could involve refining the crime and punishment system to better differentiate between malicious griefing and legitimate acts of piracy, potentially by:
    • Increasing the risk and reward for piracy: Higher potential profits for successful piracy, but also harsher penalties for those who are caught.
    • Improving the crime reporting system: Making it easier for players to report griefers and providing more tools for authorities to track down and punish offenders.
    • Creating designated areas for piracy: Establishing specific zones or systems where piracy is more prevalent and accepted, allowing players who enjoy this playstyle to engage with it without disrupting the experience of others.
    • Introducing new gameplay mechanics for piracy: Adding new tools and challenges for both pirates and their targets, such as improved interdiction methods, countermeasures, and escape tactics.
This approach would aim to create a more balanced and engaging gameplay experience for all players, regardless of their chosen playstyle.

I believe that addressing these areas would significantly enhance the Elite Dangerous experience for all commanders.

Thank you for considering these suggestions.

Sincerely,

Samir (Rimas)

Dear Elite Dangerous Development Team,

Elite Dangerous is a title I feature regularly, and I am writing to you today with several suggestions to improve the gameplay experience for both new and veteran players.

  1. Ship Interior Accessibility:
Been requested for over 8 years in various forms.

  1. NPC Crewmates:
This all gets into the automation of activities which FDev have on the whole been successfully avoiding since the start.

Community Suggestions:

In addition to my own suggestions, I have gathered feedback from my community, and I believe the following ideas have considerable merit:

  • Improved Large Ship Handling: Refining the flight mechanics of larger ships would make them more enjoyable to fly and increase their tactical viability.
But this would lose the sense that we are flying a large ship and reduce the richness of the gaming experience, plus many find flying the large ships enjoyable.
  • Fleet Carrier Control: Allowing players to pilot their fleet carriers like regular ships would unlock new gameplay possibilities and strategic options.
The thing is that Fleet Carriers aren’t regular ships but are essentially mobile stations, allowing them to operate like ships could well be overpowered unless their immunity from attack was removed so they could be destroyed like a ship.
  • Realistic Orbital Mechanics: Introducing more realistic orbital mechanics would enhance the sense of immersion and create new challenges for navigation and combat.
Yes but we are talking about starships that can wrap themselves in a warp bubble to travel faster than light in a system and land and take off from high gravity planets. With that much power most orbital mechanics challenges can be overcome by brute force.
