Elite Dangerous | System Colonisation Beta Details & Feedback

Greetings Commanders,

With the launch of our Trailblazers update we will be bringing System Colonisation to Elite Dangerous! The launch of System Colonisation will be as a live Beta for the feature, allowing us to review data and make adjustments over time. This is a significant update to Elite Dangerous and whilst we are very happy with the feature we do understand that some fine tuning may be required initially.

Though this is a Beta it will be on the live version of the game and any actions/progress made will NOT be wiped unless a significant issue is identified. Here is a brief explanation of how the Beta works:

✅ What the System Colonisation Beta is
  • Feature complete
  • All actions/resource payments made are final and will not be refunded
  • A period where we can monitor data and make balancing adjustments

❌ What the System Colonisation Beta is not
  • A work in progress
  • There will be no progress wipes
  • There will be no resource refunds

The aim of the Beta is to gather data and feedback specifically focused on resource balancing. We are happy with the System Colonisation feature itself and whilst we are always happy for you to share your feedback the aim of this Beta is aimed firmly at resource balancing and not changes to the feature itself.

To help us in our balancing we will be using this thread for you to share your feedback on the following areas:
  • Amount of resources required
  • Amount of time/distance taken to complete tasks
As always you are welcome to share additional feedback on the forums or to raise an issues you encounter on our Issue Tracker.

So much to love from what i've read so far, and really looking forward to Frontier Unlocked in a couple of hours but...

From https://www.elitedangerous.com/update-notes/4-1-0-0

do you select a system in a convenient part of Space for your next expedition

and

Turn your system into a gateway to the unknown - a perfect home base for your expeditions into the black.

Many expeditions helped by having an extra system 10 LY further out?

giving you a direct way to spread BGS factions further outside the bubble.

It is impossible in any realistic way for us to get our PMF out to the edge of the bubble due to the 10LY limitation that currently exists.

Yes, i know you said it would be reviewed during the beta phase, but really, 10LY is in no way aligning with the marketing of the feature.

EDIT: Previous poster says 15LY... still a joke.

Consider a special "boost" in range for the first system away from the bubble - i.e. first node could be placed farther , and then all others would be "normal". Think of it as a "sling" boost.
Maybe then there would be a (demanding) mechanism to gradually (tiered) increase range of the next node (massive amounts of resources etc). Repeat for each colonisation system. Purely optional (baseline ly exists) but could be increased with effort.

I'm failing to find the commodity list you have to deliver once the system colonisation ship arrives in system, the commodity market on the ship shows nothing to sell or buy, the galaxy map and system map views don't show what is needed either from what I can see, can I have some guidance on this?

15LY is a good first step. 10 was too little - I found a lot of route dead ends. 15 was much nicer. Thanks.
There will be a lot of salt from some expecting unrealistically large hops. Having a grounding in some realism logistics requirements is a good thing. Though maybe as a concession other bubbles are opened up in the near future. Colonia, Pleiades, and a couple of other mini-bubbles

Hope they do Sag A with Explorer’s Anchorage so some people hoping to get to certain places (like Great Annihilator) have the chance soonish and not within the next 5-10 years

25-40LY sounds like a reasonable balance for the update, as 10 is unfunctional and the jump to 15 made almost no difference. Having a limit makes some sense but it needs to be reasonable.

dude, fleet carrier can jump 500, trading ship can do 19 with minimal engeneering. What realistic range you are talking about? Bruh

The CMM Composite requirement for building a Coriolis station or even an Outpost seems a little steep. An Outpost requires 3,912 units of CMM Composite which requires a bunch of system-hopping as the biggest single supply is 364 according to Inara. Should be sharply reduced as this will otherwise be a significant resource bottleneck.

For comparison, a Coriolis station requires 11,261 units of CMM Composite.
