Elite: Dangerous T-Flight HotasX preset debacle

I'll be updating this list along the way, as things progress.

Long time player coming back to the game after a year or so, having been put off by the general “let’s just add new features, logic and bugs be damned” attitude, I find that my custom bindings have been wiped. No worries. I have come to expect as much from Elite: Dangerous.

So, with trembling hands I hit the T-Flight HotasX preset bindings setting supplied by FD to see how they’ve decided to map all of these glorious features.

Without further ado, let’s see what’s missing, starting with the most obvious:

  • Epic fail! When I unplug the Hotas from my PC (which I do everytime I’m finished playing E: D), E: D immediately forgets/deletes my custom bindings and returns to keyboard bindings!!! (sort of sorted. I have to plug in the hotas before launching the game and it should default to custom bindings)
  • No Hotas controls mapped for galaxy or system map. Why?
  • No Hotas controls mapped for vertical (or forward/back for that matter) flight thrust. Lateral thrust only. Why?
  • No controls mapped for cargo scoop. Why?
  • No controls mapped for landing gear. Why?
  • When in analysis mode, why don’t the controls default to combat mode when interdicted?
  • Open Discovery and Enter FSS mode do nothing (neither in or out of SuperCruise, neither in Combat or Analysis mode… - the level of mess this interface is in is beyond words) even though they are actually preset.
  • Full Spectrum System Scanner and Detailed System Scanner have separate (non-configured) presets, but are in fact now the same? I honestly can’t figure out what is what and why.
  • Is the (combat-analysis) mode switch really preset to overlap with the (honk) D-Scanner, making honking impossible to do from supercruise? Really?
  • And what is this Data Link Scanner I see on my HUD? I can’t find it in the presets section. Can’t activate it. What does it do?
  • No controls mapped for the FSS. Wow.
That'll do it for today. 2 hours of my life wasted.

Tune in next week when you'll hear Dr. Bob say... "...in some systems it's considered perjury to call that a preset..."

What a god awful convoluted and broken mess these controls are. It is actually destroying this game for me. I loved it at release, but this is ridiculous.

When you plug your hotas back in it usually goes back to the saved settings. Have this issue all the time due to my wireless xb controller / srv driving tool / FSS device tool. If that's not fired up, none of my hotas stuff works---then I turn on the controller and presto it all works again.

That said, don't bother with default mappings. I took a look at the default ones for the T16000/FCS Throttle and laughed heartily.

You may in fact still have your old hotas settings. You might have settings files pre 3, which may be in a 2.x folder. Or a beta folder. Check for a "custom.3.0.binds", but also a "custom.2.0.binds" file.

And if your hotas isnt working having unplugged it ... plug it back in? Works for me.
Can't find any old settings, but the new one I've started on does show up again when I plug the hotas back in, but it's hidden as the last option of the dropdown menu and I have to actively reselect it every time. Quirky as always.

Question did you have a different flight stick before?

Todays update:

  • No controls mapped for cargo scoop. Why?
  • No controls mapped for landing gear. Why?

I use the same HOTAS, but I keep it plugged in. I usually play E:D and DCS World.
I had to figure these things out my self, and like you said the default configuration is a joke.
For vertical thrusters I mapped the lowest HAT switch on the throttle (one with the nobby things) for up & down, works a charm.
When you have the stick in front of you:
Cargo scoop and landing gear: The buttons closest to the stick, On the right. The top button is for the scoop, one just below it is for the gear.
I can’t remember if I mapped them like that, or if it’s the default

Some more fun revelations:

  • Open Discovery and Enter FSS mode do nothing (neither in or out of SuperCruise, neither in Combat or Analysis mode… - the level of mess this interface is in is beyond words) even though they are actually preset (0 and o).

Globusdiablo I was able to solve my own problem my self The best idea is to send a Bug report to Frontier. Let them help you.

I went to the extream and copy the Binding from Appdata then uninstalled and deleted Elite Dangerous then deleted the files from Appdata that had anything to do with Elite Dangerous. Then reinstall the game and was able to reprogram the dual flight sticks. It was pain in the Blank but it worked.

I appreciate what your saying Lestat. But this might be my final attempt at actually getting Elite: Dangerous to work as intended, but the lack of decent presets for this mountain of controls is ridiculous. This game has become close to unplayable for anyone but key binding fetishists.

I run Dual flight sticks. Frontier will help if they can. Your issue might be like the issue I had when I paid for my Extra Saitek st290 Pro. It kinda falls in the same issue as your joystick. Stuff not saving. I would config on the new joystick. But it would not work unless I plug in the old joystick and plug in the new one.

Just ask them.
