ELITE:DANGEROUS .. the chair

Howdy all,

Here's alittle somethin' I whipped up in my garage over the past few days. This project was inspired mostly by my love for ED but I think the oculus had a hand in there as well. Everything except for the seat itself, the butt kicker and the hotas was hand crafted(if you can call it that) by yours truly. For the seat mount I used 1/8 x1 1/4 angle iron and the base was a combo of 1" and 1 1/4" square tube stock from homedepot. the arm rest/hotas mounts are 3/4" birch hardwood (already laying in the garage) wrapped in mouse pad. feedback and design input welcome.:cool: UPDATE: I feel I must rehash my opinion of the BK lfe mini. seems I was a little spoiled by my previous experiment. I am now of the opinion that a single mini will suffice once the amp is tuned properly and the chair has proper "isolation" from the floor. Before I purchased the mini, I had placed two 500w Kicker comp 12" subs free air on the floor behind my chair and powered them with a crunch 1000.1 amp. needless to say, that configuration shook the entire room without ever making a sound. certainly no "slapping" like i still get from time to time with the BK. I figure that given the weight of the chair and the performance of a single mini, that 2 mini's will live up to the product name and I can decrease the amp's gain to eliminate the slap altogether.

Very nice. Hmmmm, Imperial measurements and Homedepot... that would suggest American. That being the case... where are the cup holders? Seriously though, I'm jealous as hell. Well done sir.

Thank you, I'm actually really proud of it so far..gonna change a few things like the buttkicker as it's not strong enough to move this thing. after it's all done i'll break it down and repaint it with bedliner spray. that stuff is the ultimate coating lol. so far, the cost as seen (seat, hotas, BK incl.) $500. not too shabby there either i guess.

Well done. Now attach 3 to 6 linear actutors and match their movement to the movement of the joystick for ultimate immersion.

Are you spyin' on me? lol.. Been toying with the idea, I kid you not. trying to figure out the software needed to link the controls to the actuators. the rest I can build in-house..hell, I'd be happy with pitch and roll but it would have to be smooooth.

No, I'm not but that's what i would do :D
I would start from here:
- find a way to read the analog output of the joystick axis
- transmit those data with USB->RS232 to an arduino
- translation to movement in arduino
- use PWM/analog out to control the linear actuators
- use analog in to monitor the actual position
done. Any questions? Should be fairly straightforward.

What a perfect setup, it looks so retrofitted, like a legendary bounty hunter (Solo anyone?) who has pieced together a rattling hunk of cables and mismatching parts into the best ship in the galaxy.
