Elite Dangerous - this is what makes it special

Hi all

I was just thinking about ED and some of the things that make it special.

Certainly the community:-
  • I’m just about to log on to join in with Drew Wagar’s latest story
  • The Fuel Rats
  • Distant Worlds expeditions
  • Anti-Xenon Initiative
I mean, seriously, there’s loads, way too many to mention

Also, how FD has responded to the community:-
  • The naming of Beagle Point
  • Evelyn’s Light (beautiful and moving)
  • Colonia itself

And other phenomena:-
  • The Planet of Death that orbits very close to its star
  • The moon (can’t remember it’s name) that orbits too quickly. I believe this was actually a bug but FD decided to keep it in as it became a tourist attraction. Great stuff

What makes it for you guys?

Oh yeah, certainly all the little things. Fuel Rats is near the top.

Community is big. Especially if you fly regularly with some friends. Met some very cool people, flew together for and hour or so, and then never saw them again. Then again, met some major league.. "less then stellar individuals".

I like all the little tricks you pick up, just like you would IRL. All the little things to fine tune your ship and flight mechanics < thruster control, FA-Off, etc > .. incredible.

The features that define ED for me, one of my favorite games of all time.

The Good - Awesome flight mechanics, the ships have real character, good level of options and detail in ship equipment, full scale solar systems, stellar sound and great graphics, and it's currently the only option of it's kind.

The Bad - Grindy game design, placeholder tier mission quality, artifical economy, immortal bugs, all fights are dogfights and thus have no tactical layer, barely any cockpit cosmetics, no stealth, poor balance and open is ghost townish because the interactions between pve/pvp CMDRs is handled poorly.

Fight in the asteroid belt and you have your tactical layer & my DBX disappears on enemy radars

Moving around obstacles is not tactics. You're free to tell yourself it is though.

You only drop off radar outside of combat, so there is no stealth combat. You have stealth when traveling, but only in normal space, where it isn't really useful, and not in supercruise where it would be useful. Again, tell yourself you have stealth if it pleases you.

Pfft, all my combat ships are painted in Midnight Black, no one can see me :D

The community expeditions are #1 for me, especially Distant Worlds. Its a shame DW only happens once every three years!

The Colonia initiative in the early days was awesome too.

I like the way Frontier are open to add player created lore into the game as well, like the naming of famous places, and the memorials they add to the game for fallen commanders. Great gestures imo.

Everybody knows I love Space Engineers, despite the abnormally small planets and single solar system. But what Elite does that no other* game seems to do right is heliocentric solar systems. A static skybox with the sun racing around non-moving planets like Apollo dragging his flaming chariot may fool some people, but it doesn't fool me! (I'm talking about Space Engineers). This is where Elite shines. It's especially cool to operating from a specific system for a couple of months and observe how the planets change their alignment in the sky. I've never tried it, but I bet you could even measure a change in shadow length depending on what time of year it is.

TL;DR - STELLAR FORGE!!! :D

* never played SC so correct me if need be

It's the flight model hands down!!!

O and the unique crime and punishment system...I mean I have never, ever seen anything like it. I wish the real world was like this...imagine if all your crimes could be tied to your assets. No sir it was not i or me but my shoes that came over here and kicked you in the keister!...bad shoes.

Game sound design and its impact to atmosphere.
How to ruin a perfectly fine game by propping up unnecessary power creep.
Live service, MP and its drawbacks and cocessions to make when you really only wanted a SP experience.
Designing a system like BG sim and players adopting it as major gameplay loop.

To me it's the ability to experience and appreciate the sheer scale of things around me. So vast and wondrous Elite is one of the few games where I don't feel the need to be a completionist and can do things at my own leisure. I hope this feeling will be further enhanced with Odyssey.

Player minor factions on the other hand are the worst thing about the game, littering systems with their silly names. Soon there will be no such thing as a native NPC minor faction in control of their home system.

I was born, in a driving rain. Pick and Shovel are my middle names.
So if you see me coming better step aside. A lot of men didn't .. and a lot of men died.

(In fact a lot of things but I love how you can go from the smooth blue hair of imperial ship designs and deep space B star sunrises to the gnarliest of gnarly thargoids .. and biowaste return trading)
