Elite Dangerous uploads huge amounts of data

Hi everyone,
I am playing Elite for 2 days now and I noticed that when I play online Elite periodically uploads huge amounts of data. I played for 30 minutes and noticed that aprox. 10 MB are uploaded each time. And even
Does somebody know, what Elite is uploading there and how I can restrict that? (I have pre-industrial-age internet with a max. upload speed of 21KB/sec., so those 10 MB getting uploaded eat up my whole internet for 8 minutes).

Are you playing solo or open? Also, is it a one time deal (i.e. it is uploading a crash dump) or does it just get spread over time?

I have played for less than an hour now and according to NetBalancer, Elite has downloaded 33,3MB in this session - an uploaded more than 60MBs!
The upload starts when I am entering Supercruise and stops some time after I am out of Supercruise.

Not really that much, Being an online game it is up and downloading data on the locations you are emerging into and other CMDRs in that area. If you use CTRL B you will get the bandwidth displayed as you go along. Sometimes you get early warning of an interdiction like that.

Thanks for the CTRL B hint.

'Huge' amount of data ...

Don't think that's anything we should worry about. Statistics, reports, just game data.
Well, it's propably nothing you should worry about, and you should be glad for that ;). Anyway, for me it's a paine in the , since I won't be able to do anything in that time: When I talk in Teamspeak I lag for other People, Websites won't load, since the request is getting send veeeeery slow.
Also I noticed, that the internal bandwith-recording from Elite (CTRL+B) isn't showing the same values like NetBalancer and my router. While Elite shows an upload of ~200B/s, NB Shows ~21KB/s, which complies with my router showing that the upload is being used by 100%.

Guys, remember that ED uses a semi-Peer2Peer system, so while we play we all can happen to act as server for other players.
Saves frontier many server costs, so we don't have to pay monthly sub. :)

I am playing open. Also it looks like it only happens when I am in Supercruise.

It's the Peer to Peer networking model Frontier uses to make this a subscription-free game. In supercruise, you're probably hosting the instance for several players, which increases the amount of data you're sending out. If data costs are a concern, play solo so that the only data being uploaded are transactions.

Rather than using the solo clutch it's worth asking what systems you are generally playing in? Obviously a more populated system is going to see more connections via peer-to-peer and thus more data transfer.
I don't know what Lave and the like see in ships per 24 hours but it must be pretty darn high. A quieter system that gets <100 visits per 24 hours would make a huge difference to data consumption.

I suspect this might be down to the fact that in SC everything is moving faster so the server needs to know about your position, state and environment much more frequently so in the event of a crash or interdiction your last recorded place wasn't light years away. Because of the p2p network model more of the traffic goes between players rather than directly from the server to you so I would expect the total of sent data to be higher. The person hosting the island might even be transmitting stuff like NPC positions to others in the island.

There is probably a lot of telemetry too as a lot has been added over beta and gamma to help catch bugs and they never state when they disable a certain part of that telemetry so if all of it is still active it will add up too.

You could use something like Netlimiter to restrict the connection. As far as I know the game engine selects the better connections for the island hosts so it should help opt you out of that but if you limit too much I would expect it to start affecting the game. Solo only uses a tiny dribble of data if you want to try that but obviously you won't see other Commanders.

I have limited Elite upload to 10KB/s with NetBalancer right now, and can't see any problems so far. But it's still eating up all 10KB/s while in SC, but that's fine with me.

I look forward to seeing you rubberband around a system shortly then.....
