Elite Dangerous Wiki

OK I have a great idea or question on how ED should/could be made and at the moment I can search the forums and depending on the words I use possibly miss an entire article or design discussion on said topic.

Therefore would a better searchable knowledge base be a Wiki on the design and features of Elite Dangerous?

E.g. I've done searches for info on Star Wars and found myself bumping into it's 'Wookipedia' which is a great trove of information.

This could also be a great place for the writers to provide Bio's and background information that relate to their stories.

That's a start but it doesn't seem to have any of the depth that has gone into the design documents?

There is the alioth wiki for the previous elite games and oolite, info on ships, lore, factions, story etc. Unfortunately the screenshots from previous games don't look good anymore.

I agree Elite Dangerous needs a good "database" but not much info on ships / equipment has been released by frontier, and any info on gameplay is subject to change during alpha / beta. You could copy the DDF stuff and the feature request to the wiki, but it would be better to wait till beta 2 at least. It's basically a bunch of maybe.

It is a bit disappointing that Star Citizens have a list of ships and equipment on their website, with flashy presentation and good screenshots / renderings. ED is due to come out this year but doesn't have any info on ships on their website.

PS: I just followed your link, pretty neat =) Where did you get the ship models? Did you recreate them?
I thought about doing the same just in WebGL like EVE has done here. Frontier Development should do it, it's basically a weekends worth to do with a webgl 3d engine like three.js, just need to export their ship models.

Yes, I modeled the ships based on the blueprints/images ED provided in their newsletters. Personally I think they would be better off using the Unity game engine as then they could port a ship and equipment database to mobile platforms and also link it into the game.

In theory you could manage the re-supply and re-equipping of your ship from a mobile app. Or just surf the datastreams within the ED universe. Plan trade routes and chat to other ED players in a mobile app.

Or via a web app, but browser limitation could limit the WebGL content to PC / mac platforms only.

Oh wow, you can even "fly" them! Almost like a minigame all by itself. :D

Nifty website! I'm really growing fond of the Viper again .. and yes, I agree with Dejay; I'd love if Frontier would release some more material.

PS: I don't think I can ever get used to the shape of the Imperial Fighter, tho.

Sure, if you're volunteering ;)

Personally I feel like things are changing faster than a wiki can really keep up. I answer a lot of newbie questions, and am surprised how rarely I repeat myself. The ongoing "guild" discussion is a good example - it covers a lot of the same ground as the PvP discussions many months ago, but some important things have changed now we know more about communication and supercruise, so I've actually found it more useful to keep my mouth shut a lot of the time.

I do think now would be a good time to start drawing people into the lore so they can appreciate the books when they come out. The authors need to lead that process though, and I'm not sure the best way we can help them do that.

That would be cool, yeah. I think there was also talk about a "web api" for the game. That could be used from unity too of course.

But just as a marketing tool to build up hype, a very simple webgl viewer would be easy for them to do. The eve viewer runs on my chrome under android for example. Just the navigation is a bit screwed up, it needs touch support :D
