Elite: Dangerous Wiki

Hi guys,

Some of you will have already seen me post about this on the Kickstarter comments, but stuff gets buried pretty quickly there so I thought I'd share it here too.

I've started a wiki dedicated to collecting Elite Dangerous game data. Eventually I'm hoping it will provide a great resource for players and, as a software developer, I'll be looking to leverage the data to create apps to support the game. In the meantime it would be great if it could become a repository for all info regarding the kickstarter and development of what will be an awesome game.

I'm looking for help in developing existing and new articles further. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
John

One thought that occured is to have the in-game system info actually linked to a Wiki so that it could change and grow based on player contributions to the Wiki.

With the obvious available hacks of changing the planetary government status to trick people into visiting your own personal pirate kingdom :eek:

Nice to see one started I'd like to request however that you do something most wiki's seem to forget. That's to have a decent front end with a good menu and navigation system in it.

Other than that carry on.

There's a section for Elite Dangerous on the Elite Wiki at http://wiki.alioth.net if anyone's interested. It's being maintained primarily by the Oolite crowd but any editors who fancy giving it a go are more than welcome and any input would be appreciated.

Because the wiki is new and spammers haven't found it yet, anonymous editing is still enabled so it's easy for anybody to help out.

It may not stay this way forever.

Thanks for setting this up John. The trouble with forums is that although they contain a lot of useful info it's hard to find. Of course unthreaded KS comments are even worse ...

IMHO a wiki is a better solution, although it would be good to confirm that Frontier don't not end to maintain some sort of extended FAQ/detailed game description themselves?

Even if FD do intend to maintain such information, the cross-over will be very little. The wiki will be more focused on in-game data about the evolving universe etc.

Thanks for the clarification John. I obviously didn't read your post carefully enough (I didn't read 'game data' as in-game data.)

John, it is only concerned with the game itself? The reason for asking is it would be handy to have a repository for E : D Books info too. Not a problem if you want to keep it very focussed - just thought I'd ask!

Cheers,

Drew.

To clarify:

My original intention was to focus on in-game data because that is of interest to me from a software development angle.

However, the wiki would be incomplete if it didn't include information about the game itself, it's origins, history and information about how to play, tips, tactics etc so I want that there too.

Drew, I am happy for it to also feature a comprehensive database of fiction as I see that as related information to the series. However, if such information were to be put on the wiki I'd need some help with it (nudge, nudge).

How would you see this interacting with the Wikipedia page? I was trying to keep that page in line with all the content during the KS campaign, but it got a bit too much after all the little tidbits thrown up in the AMA. I've done a good chunk of work to that page, but am happy to change/for you to change it around if you like.

Wow, you've done a good job on the Wikipedia page. I'm not sure on how much they should interact; I want the game wiki to be a lot more in-depth and there won't be any strict requirement to cite/reference everything.

If you think there's stuff in the Wikipedia entry that's missing from the game wiki then please feel free to bring it over; I need all the help I can get.

A lot of the stuff I couldn't find a home for on WP were things where FD have said "we will/might/won't do such-and-such", but not explained it in enough detail that I could describe it thoroughly. Here's some examples - where (if at all) would you see them going on Wikia?

* stealth (venting heat etc.)
* weapons taking a moment to ready
* jump engines taking a moment to fire
* witchspace exit points appearing before the player
* returning to saved games
* punishment for PvP kills
* apologising for accidental shots
* multi-monitor support
* astronomical effects
* an orrery

I just tried to set up an account for the wiki, and set up a new password. However upon receiving the email and clicking on the link, the login screen doesn't recognise the password I set up.

I'm sorry to hear that. The login side of things is handled by wikia.com so there is not much I can do about it. All I can say is that in the time you posted this there were other users able to register an account successfully. Hopefully one of them was you.
