Elite Dangerous With PlayStation VR

I'm not sure whether this has been asked or mentioned before, but with ED eventually being ported to the PS4, is it likely that it will also support PlayStation VR?
I'm assuming that the guys over at FD will have been able to get their hands on the development kit for this, so I wonder if anyone from FD could confirm or deny this is a possible inclusion?

I'd be completely amazed if they answered this before at least having a standard PS4 port running and well tested first. Until then it'd be way too early for them to speculate on how feasible it would be to implement.

I'd think that control scheme might be a limiting factor there though, unless there's some kind of reasonable HOTAS setup available I can't imagine it'd give an experience as good as PC-based VR does with the limited axes/buttons available. On the other hand, something like ED might help drive support for better suited controls to be released?

While I agree a HOTAS is a superior experience, I don't see why a PS4 controller won't work? Elite is out on Xbox, and I've even seen people playing PC Elite: Dangerous with an X-Box controller.

The real question is, does the PS4 have the CPU to push ED in VR with the extra overhead. I don't know how the Xbox One version (non-VR) compares to the PC version. I'd imagine there are already compromises porting to a console. Throw in the need to render 60 fps with head tracking.

Well with the PS4 Neo on the way they do have the potential to add more power to do the calculations directly on the console for terrain generation and such for VR.

Without that extra power? I think it will be having issues, like xbox one is having, and why porting horizon to it is taking a while. But I think it will come.

As for PS4 controller, it is superior to Xbox one controller in terms of input, you have several more combo options, like with xbox one you could have hold X and press dpad direction, but you could also have hold x swipe on touch pad, or click touch pad, or similar. I used a PS4 controller for playing Elite last year when I broke my arm, more then enough combo possibilities on it with the DS4windows app for using it on pc just perfectly fine, add voice attack and no issues for me.

I can understand the delay for Elite and PS4 VR, the dev kits for the PS4k or Neo are out, the hardware is uprated, amd 8 core at 2.1ghz I believe which could equal the minimum VR spec Frontier have announced (amd 4 core at 4.2ghz) . With gpu memory boosted to 218gb/s and 36 Compute units boosted to 911mhz clock. (4.2tflops, which is same or better than GTX 970 i think) Should be enough to generate 60fps at native 1080p and then the PSVR up that to 120fps. I think the neo should be on sale the same time as PSvr is released in october, so that is a month I have in mind for Elite VR.

I can see the game being playable with it, I guess the question is how many combinations of presses/inputs will work when you're using it "blind", and presumably without support of something like voice-attack (unless the PS4 has some sort of replacement for that.)

I definitely don't think the controller should be a reason *not* to implement it, I'm just not sure how good it would be compared to the controls we've been blessed with on PC. Even if not perfect though, it'd still be more than worth pushing out to escape the chicken/egg scenario - "Why produce PS4 compatible flight controls, if no games need them?" Having been lucky enough to play in VR with the Rift, I sincerely hope that eventually it's an option for players on every platform - nobody should have to miss out on that experience :)

I thought developers were under strict order not to release games that are exclusive to Neo. It's something to do with not upsetting the owners of the vanilla PS4. Of course they might make an exception for VR games <grin>

Yes, so I presume there could be a low detail version for ps4 vr, or vr has an exemption of that rule.

best game to have that sort of thing but with people showing off there setups of 'game cabs' and '6 screen gaming stations made specifically for this game' i think it would be a downgarde to what is already out there. not saying its not a good idea and a more affordable way to play in 3d, isnt it already out on pc in 3d?

The ps4 controller is quite easy to use blind, similar to how the xbox one controller comes with the oculus rift, it is very easy to use because of their shape and location of buttons.

Edit: though that said, it really shouldn't be hard to make existing hotas or similar PS4 or xbox one compatible, it is just about microsoft and sony allowing it to happen, architecture is the same as pc so it is just a driver issue.

for once, the 1st time ever..... i (partly) agree with beechlight.... with the new PS4 coming out (and is actually the kind of spec it should have been from day 1) I actually think ED in VR may actually be feasible. The issue may actually be however, as i understand it, anything which is supported on neo HAS to be supported on the base PS4... and alas, unlike beechlight - I still think the base console will be unable to run ED in VR without massive compromises, and I am not sure sony would allow that on the base PS4 either.

its exciting times for PS4 for me.... I had no interest in the base machine, it is far too under speeced but, with some tidy PS4 exclusives, I will probably be all over neo. Its still not even close to a high end gaming pc in terms of raw performance, but with to the metal coding, the actual final product may be comparable... I just hope keeping 100% compatibility with the base PS4 does not hamstring it too much.

If ED can run on an XBox it can run on a PS4, it just maybe that it can only do VR on the PS4 Neo or whatever it's called, to me ED will be able to be supported on both systems, only one of them can do VR though.

oh sure, i do not doubt the PS4 could do a (very good) job of running ED, however my understanding is - and maybe i missread it - that even as far as VR, if it is supported on neo, it has to also be supported on the standard machine.

if not however then that means as you say, the solution is simple.

Stated September release of Playstation Neo (PS 4.5), stated October release of Sony Vr.

Sony even has a HOTAS ready to go:

All we need now is for the Xbox exclusive to expire.

Elite: Dangerous on Playstation Neo in Sony VR with Thrustmaster HOTAS come christmas anyone? I think so. :)

Got one of those a vew days ago. They work very well with PC and PS4!! ( only there are not may games on PS4 right now that suport it )
You even can hook up some TFRP Rudder Pedals to it!

I think they do not will port it to the PS4 (to complicated for this company)... but hey, other companys will release very good space games... like ADrift, GunMan, Eve Valkyrie... and a lot will follow. You do not need Elite Dangerous.

Also I think BattleFront II will have an Addon fpr VR then you can fight with a light saber :)

With PVR released this October, do you think Frontier may have a PS4 release for this christmas?

Would be a nice surprise.
