Elite Dangerous won't start on Oculus Rift

Hi guys, I bought Elite Dangerous yesterday over the Steam shop. Unfortunately I can't start it over SteamVR, nor over Oculus Home. If I try to start in in Oculus home it tells me "please wait" in the HMD, but it starts on my screen with a black background and music coming out of my speakers instead of the HMD hedphones. Any idea how to solve this problem? If i try to start it over SteamVR it tells me "compositor not available" and "not ready". Thanks in advance!

Check in oculus settings that its checked off for "unknown sources".
Then start the game via launcher, and while the oculus software is running.
And in ed graphics settings under 3d, select HMD headphones.
This should activate the rift as the vr display.

Since you are not using oculus direct to launch you need to set the default audio device for windows to the rift headset as well.

Also, try launching ED as administrator. I have to run VorpX as admin; otherwise, I get the Oculus please wait screen indefinitely — could be the same with ED in your case. Good luck!

HMD option isn't available for me either. Steam vr works but not the "normal" mode. I have done the above things with oculus allowing external programs and using ED in administrator mode. VR worked fine until commanders beta, when the beta launched, the vr hasn't worked for me, and the old 2.2 versions ran fine until it was dropped. Also my hotas configuration vanished so not a good start for 2.3

I'm not sure if this is related, but my game starts in screen mode each time instead of hmd mode. I have to go into the graphics settings each time and switch to hmd.

The workaround was to launch from the .exe app inside the ED folder in steamapps instead of hitting play on steam.

Take your headset off and look at the screen is there a little box asking for permission to run the application or connect to the internet as some virus killers/network monitors will make the game wait for confirmation !

I started the game with elitedangerous64.exe directly and it started in hmd mode, but it gave a "login failure" so I can't play the actual game that way...
Also I verified the game files but that didn't help either.

I would wipe and re-download. I had to do this when I installed windows 10 on a system last week with similar effects. Worked for me.

Go to the Frontier page. FD have allowed everyone to play via any distribution as long as you have bought one copy.

Enter the steam key and you can download the game via Frontier store.
This will allow you to log in via the launcher instead of Steam AND the launcher.

I don't use steam for ED, haven't looked back.

Yeah I guess I have to try that, I had the stand alone installer previously but deleted since steam version worked ok, but now im first trying the Oculus key, I like running vr stuff in oculus home anyway when possible.
