Elite: Dangerous

I see a lot of people citing the name of the game in regards to AI. "The game should be DANGEROUS, it's in the name!" "It's called Elite: Dangerous because there should be danger lurking around every corner!"

But isn't it really called that because in the lore the Elite Pilots Federation opened their doors to ranks below, first to deadly, then to dangerous rank? So it's sort of the opposite in a way. Elite opens it's doors to those less accomplished.

Not claiming a side in the NPC crusades, just was thinking about it this morning.

Yes, but they could've called the game Elite: Harmless, because that's the first rank you'll get in game. They didn't.

Actually, the Pilots Federation is so picky, they can't have anyone in there that isn't a dangerous person. It doesn't mean they want the less accomplished in there. They mean, the people they are looking for should be so good, the less capable one should be a pilot to be feared. Deadly already speaks for itself and Elite pilots should be able to intimidate even the deadly rank pilots.

So, while referring to the lowest PF admittance rank, it still means pretty much what it means when taken at face value.

Well ELITE has always been kinda dangerous but seems to be out of touch with modern gaming and gamers and why ED pretty much has received bad rep by many, i do find many modern views to be kind of insulting and bizarre if i'm brutally honest but hey if frontier want to have numbers in their game they have to try and cater for all which is a thankless task really so i wish them well.

I've heard that one a few times, but it doesn't really wash with me.
I just take it at face value because it sounds exciting.

I wonder what reasons the marketeers at FDEV had?

This is accurate and was first stated during the kickstarter.

Funnily enough, the new lore says the Founders World is only open to members of the EFP, and that indeed the EFP has lowered its entry barrier to Dangerous...but IG you still need to be Elite to access it.

But let's be frank here. Nobody is going to believe they picked the title Elite: Dangerous out of lore considerations. It just sounds like the title of a game set in a dystopian world, the advertised cut-throat galaxy, which doesn't handle the player with kids gloves. It was very much a marketting decision to attract an 'elitist' crowd, so using it as an argument against dumbing the game down is very valid IMO.

That's a very good point. It's also not an argument for making it harder either though. It is what it is (or should be, bugs aside).

I would love it if npc abilities were based off of a PCs abilities. Meaning that above a certain rank they're usually faster and more accurate than a PC and below that rank, they're slower and less accurate. Unfortunately I can't figure out a way for that plan to work in online or group where there may be > 1 PC fighting an NPC. Maybe base it off of average response time, accuracy and so forth.

I'm enjoying the game either way, I'd just like to see a conclusion to the issue.

In a game where you have total invincibility by waiting 15 seconds with no repercussion?

What dangerous?

*Chuckles in the background*
