Elite, err dangerous?

Am I right in remembering that in the original game the top 3 pilot `ranks` were dangerous, deadly then elite? If so why is this game called elite: dangerous? Isn't that a bit like saying someone has just won olympic gold: bronze?

Just curious if the reasons are known for this if anyone knows...

Because it sounds cool?

because if it was just called 'Elite' then it would get confused with the original game and 'Elite: Elite' would sound silly.

Agreed! Although I've got used to it.
I can't recall exactly what the reasoning is but DB has explained it. Something to do with the notion of an nominal/honorary rating bestowed on those who are not yet Elite, but are good enough to become so. Or something.

I'm sure a similar lore based explanation could've been created to justify a cool sounding title that was not, in terms of the rating nomenclature, semantically anticlimactic! ;)

But as I said, I'm used to it now.

There is an actual reason behind this somewhere as explained by DBOBE. Unfortunately I can't remember where the link is.

From the DDA Ratings and Reputations. My emphasis but I think it's, at least, partly related. It's also a cool name.

Getting the Elite rating (in any of the four rankings) automatically gets you into the exclusive “Elite Federation of Pilots” – and being a member of the Elite federation confers many privileges. It is also possible for pilots without the “Elite” rating to gain admission to the EFP

...

It is expected the majority of these will be “Elite: Dangerous” and “Elite: Deadly”. Those with an “Elite” rating get the original, unadorned badge.

In my mind it is still "Elite IV", but one could argue that this is a misnomer, because:

1. Elite (1984)
2. Elite II (unreleased)
3. Elite-A (a.k.a. Elite III - late 1980s, released 1997)
4. Elite Plus (MS-DOS, 1991)
5. Arc Elite (1991)
6. Frontier: Elite II (1993)
7. Frontier: First Encounters (once more a.k.a. Elite III - 1995)
8. Elite: Dangerous (a.k.a. Elite IV)

My bet is that the name "Elite: Dangerous" is because of marketing reasons. (If only to avoid confusion with this :D)

It's clearly because this is the first game in an upcoming trilogy.

Elite : Dangerous
Elite: Deadly
Elite: Elite.

The first part has flying, planetary landings, EVA and 4k (2014)

Elite : Deadly will have multiple alien races, hyper jumps between galaxies and 16K (and Oculus 2 support) (2034)

And Elite : Elite will have its own actual Matrix. (2054)

If I remember rightly there is the Elite: _____ ranks and the pure Elite rank, with no semicolon, which is the highest rank.

I was under the impression that Elite: Dangerous was the maximum rank you could obtain when you reached the Elite rankings through the alternative means introduced for this game (trading and exploring I think). So your trading reputation alone can not elevate you to the rank of Elite or Elite: Deadly, but it can elevate you to Elite: Dangerous.

Also it sounds good.

lol, that's exactly what i remember, somewhere DB already explained that but can't remember where, the OP should try "my other car is a cobra" video with DB, i think that was there.

Someone please throw money at this man. Elite: Elite is a brilliant name.

It doesn't really make sense; I thought Dangerous was the 4th highest and that would make sense because it's elite 4. However 4th highest is Competent and I don't think Elite: Competent is a very good name.

It's just that it sounds cool, most people don't understand the reference anyway so it's fine.

Elite: Average, dlc for free ships coming soon for those who don't want to grind.

I'd be more concerned about the lack of danger and challenge in the game than its name ;)

because the galaxy is a very dangerous space that should be explored with caution?! as many a beta commander is learning on a daily basis :p

plus we all know what the most DANGEROUS creatures (erm insectoids) in the galaxy are, right?

On "Archimedes Elite":

Still the best one in my opinion even though it probably doesn't count as a true port.

Agreed. Warren Burch and Clive Gringras were working on a game that was not Elite, but resembled it. To avoid legal problems, they eventually released it as an official Elite variant.

Needed many more kills to become Elite.

Indeed, there was also a "Very Deadly" rating between "Deadly" and "Elite".

SPACEWEED!!!

ARCTURIAN MEGAWEED!!! if I remember correctly.

I have to say (imho) elite:dangerous has always sounded a bit silly to me (it sounds rather anti-climactic to my literal mind - as in WOT ONLY DANGEROUS?) and (as has been mentioned ad nauseam) has the rather unfortunate initials ED ...

But having made those criticisms, unfortunately I can't come up with anything better :D

I can't find the link (on mega slow connection, might have been the Scott Manly one) but it was roughly as follows. At the higher ranks (Dangerous, Deadly and Elite) DBOBE's point was that there was probably a minute amount of skill difference between pilots of that rank, if any at all. What the higher ranks do show is a greater amount of time spent. So it's "Dangerous" as a pilot of that rank could be as skilled as a Deadly or Elite ranked pilot, but simply hasn't accrued the same amount of pilot time.

...and could be tempted in by the offer of early access to the supercool Elite Club only to be given all the crummy jobs. Therefore the Elite:Elite pilots could go back to sitting around smoking Arcturian Megaweed rather than risk getting shot while flying escort for some Z list celebrity.
