Elite exploration - OCD nightmare...

How do you really know that you found and scanned every belt, moon, planet and star in a system?

How are you going to fully and thoroughly get through all 400 billion systems?

This game is a completionists nightmare :(

It's impossible to scan every planet in the game.

Think about it, 400,000,000,000 star systems, some of which have up to 15 planets, not to mention the moons and belts.
The time it takes to traverse across some star systems can take upwards of 30 minutes + scanning times + refuel times, ultimately it would take longer than your life span to get everything scanned in game.

You have thrown down the gauntlet Sir....I shall pass this task on from generation to generation

The first one is easy. Get an advanced discovery scanner. One honk and you have discovered the lot.

I can imagine your will.

And to my son: I leave command of my Cobra Mk III. Use it wisely. I have traversed a great distance, and it's your responsibility to take care of this ship, and finish what I have started

If you get the Advanced Discovery scanner it scans the entire solar systems for objects so there will not be gaps for the dedicated explorer.

It gets much worse; I dropped into a resource zone in the rings of some beautiful gas giant and found myself being very meticulous with what I mined. I was safe enough as there were security patrols around me.
The problem was once I started burning into my first asteroid I had to burn into every other asteroid around me (except the dangerously spinning ones) and fill my hold with metallic goodies. It has become a meta-game in itself and I cannot remember the last time I got into a fight or explored somewhere for the simple enjoyment of exploring somewhere.
It is now all about conservation of energy to maximise profit… I do not want to waste fuel on sightseeing trips I am compelled instead to mine and sell, mine and sell and if interdicted I boost and run with no worries about being killed because repairs eat into profits.

I really love my Lakon 6 but I am developing a terrible habit for penny pinching

I've just started on the exploration route - love the change of pace and appreciating what FD have put in the game!

I too am starting to feel my ocd side come out, are advanced discovery scanners worth the price?

Absolutely yes, they're a massive time saver.

Note for OCD types <cough>...

The System Map has a "tell". If you use your WASD or joystick to move your view to the right, it shows you the "space" that is allocated to fill the map with planets.

For single-star maps, it's a sure-fire indicator as to whether you've scanned everything or not.

Ssh, don't tell anyone at FD we've noticed...!

Even if you could do one per minute non stop 400,000,000,000, it would take you approx 761 thousand years. Now at a more realistic 30 mins per system, you better take lots of coffee. Its gonna take about 22,830,000 years. that's 23 million years including toilet breaks

Yes, they are worth every penny you need to put in it!
I've been exploring as I find it most relaxing of all. But I only had Basic Disco Scanner with me so I was stuck with looking for moving object with a naked eye.
When I finally bought Advanced Disco, mapping entire systems and deciding if they are worth scanning planets down with detailed scans has become a lot easier and less time-consuming.

One look at the map after scanning a system and you already know these 15 ice planets are not worth the fuss.
On the other hand, one look at the map and you immediately notice 5 high-metal planets and two Earth-like worlds - you know you've hit jackpot!

And, there's one more thing to it. I've recently died while carried away during exploration and decided to fly between asteroids. I've hit one accidentally and I estimate I lost scan data worth around 1M creds. I went back to exploring and heading towards my target (won't tell you which as no one has been there yet and I want to be first!) so Advanced Disco helps me in determining if system I'm in is worth detailed scanning or not. And since I've lost a lot of time, I just save interesting system names in screenshots to return to them on my way back. I wouldn't know that without ADS.

Last, but not least, if you stumble upon a black hole, it may be really difficult to find it if it's far away from your solar entry point. ADS at least locates it for you :)

Is it worth a buy? You damn bet it is!

Pro tip by a Trailblazer:

Use the Advanced Discovery Scanner and then just explore stars and interesting planets (i.e. not icy or rocky planets). You can guess the type by checking size and colour in the system view.

Absolutely! I refused to let myself start exploring until I could afford one, because there's no way you'll scan everything in many systems without it - such as one system I recently went to that had all the planets near the star except one, that was several thousand Ls out...and being a planet it'd take you forever to find it without an advanced scanner.
