Community Event / Creation Elite Galaxy Online

Hi Commanders,

About a month ago, I had an idea about creating a website for all explorers in the Elite Dangerous Galaxy. The idea was to create a website where Commanders could directly record details of their discoveries out in the galaxy. The hope was that together we would be able to create the largest living record of the Elite Dangerous galaxy ever created.

The idea kind of grew from there and i'm really happy to say after that a lot of hard work and effort, its finally ready!

Let me introduce Elite Galaxy Online.

Some of the main features of the site are:

1. The ability to directly record any Stars and Planets you discover out there in the black directly into the site. This includes all of the statistics regarding the object as well as the ability to upload a screenshot and describe your discovery for all to see.

2. The ability to search all of the records created on the site. As it grows this could be used to search for all objects that have been first discovered by you.

3. Records. There's a whole bunch of dynamic record screens like "hottest star ever recorded", "largest gas giant ever recorded" etc. These are all live and so are immediately updated as new discoveries come in.

4. Exploration Points. As you record a new discovery you earn exploration points, the amount depending on how complex the object was to record directly on the site. You can then see commander rankings and we can see the greatest explorers in the galaxy.

I think its really come together well and would be grateful if you could spend some time to have a look.

Any feedback welcome, good or bad!

Cheers

Commander Wolzan

This is great work! I hope a lot of people see this, looks like you have put a lot of effort in and made a great tool for the community.

I will be adding some locations to this for sure.

Brilliant work and +Rep. I think Whiterose is right, it might be better in explorer forum but amazing! I will be participating if I get the time :)

I have a suggestion :D
Under "Select type" you have planets and stars, but what about inputting stations?

Thanks commander, definitely a good suggestion and it was on the original "to do" list but was cut as things moved on. I've got this on the list of potential future things to add.

Fantastic idea, and well presented!

Are the records derived from the data submitted, or are they tied in with the Universal Cartographics Record Breakers?

The records are simply derived from the data which is entered to the site. I'm afraid I wasnt aware of Universal Cartographics Record Breakers until quite far into the development of this.

WOW. Nice thread, very useful.
Wrt to eart-like planets. You might want to have a look at the tread "List of Earth-like planets"

I've added it to EDCodex. Also created a small post in my third party tools thread- the info in EDCodex is more elaborate. Before EDCodex will be released you (like all other authors) with tools/threads in EDCodex (approx 150+ atm) will receive an invitation PM with a ready made account so you can edit/enhance your entry/entries - if you deem that useful. EDCodex is being coded by biobob.

Update: Rep +1.

I also have a couple of suggestions to make that might improve stickiness/retention.

At the moment you have a single image upload for a given system that's been entered. I suggest allowing a number of images per object so you can have a system map and a few ship/debug cam shots. Maybe 5 image uploads? This way you can create a new "Gallery" section, where you can present images based upon criteria such as earth-like, terraform candidate or whatever
Also in relation to the image upload, put in a step between the upload and committing the image to the entry. A simple confirmation that the image is the right one, just in case someone makes a mistake picking their image.

I very much like the approach you've made with this site Wolzan. Thank you for the kind words about that lava world in Grafias. :)

Ohhhh, there's a duplication for Sagittarius A*. :)
I'm not trying to trump CMDR lamp, because a lot of us want Sagittarius A* to be a special entry. Certain high value/traffic systems might need curating. Sagittarius A*, The Great Annihilator, Thor's Eye and other unique entries might need editorial oversight.

Thanks Commander,

Totally agree with the images suggestions - added to the list.

The multiple image one is going to need a bit of work first but the confirmation step should be quite easy and yeah I think thats a definite oversight on my part :) The other commander has already requested his recording of Sag A is deleted.

Glad you like it

Elite Galaxy Online has just been updated to v1.1

There's a number of improvements to the site but the new headline features are:

- Ability to edit any of your discoveries
- Ability to delete your discoveries if needed
- A completely new screenshot management system to give much more flexibility over the screenshots attached to your discoveries. It is also now possible to have up to 5 different screenshots to show off the discovery in the best way possible!

Hey there sorry for the necro. I learnt about Elite Galaxy Online from a friend and was trying to figure out its place in the ecosystem of things like the Galactic Mapping Project and Universal Cartographics Record Breakers.

I was wondering if there was any overlap and if you're working together with these folks and EDSM.
