Elite Galaxy Online

Hi Commanders,

Some shameless promotion here im afraid but i have realised that this area of the forum is a good place to put this.

I've created a website for explorers to be able to record details of the discoveries they have made out there in the Galaxy.

You can enter details of your discoveries, upload screenshots and search the other discoveries that people have made.

There's also some dynamic record tables which update automatically as discoveries are entered.

Its coming on pretty well so far having just been updated to v1.1.

You can take a look at elitegalaxyonline.com

I'll try and add a few of my discoveries today. Of course all need verifying by UC when I return which I'm planning to Xmas time (ish)
On a long trip core wards and then NF tagging before slowly turning about and heading home.

Very, very nice work on the site. I just input my one and only ELW that proudly bears my name under "first discovered by". I'll drop in some of my other discoveries from time to time, the highlights at least :)

A possible nice update would be adding a category - galactic grid coordinates for the systems we input. I wonder if it'd be possible to have a small galaxy map on the site with rough positions of discovered systems with filters (such as ELW's, Water Worlds, etc, then when you select a category their approximate positions pop on the map). It'd probably be a lot of work to pull it off, though.

Thanks commander,

A very good suggestion aswell - I've added it to the roadmap.

I'm knee deep in the middle of the 1.2 update at the minute though so yes I think it's gonna take a while before I can get a map on the site. If 1.2 continues to go as well as it is doing though I think it's gonna be something really special :)

Hello CMDR Wolzan,

I have to give you reps and kudos on an excellent job with the website! Very pretty, very well done, and it really collects all the information for the objects submitted!

I played a little bit with it and entered an ELP in a binary system. So entered the data for the planet and both stars just to get the hang of it.

A few things, though, that I would like to point out from a pragmatic approach.

I am sure you are familiar with other projects that have attempted to collect data from the ED Galaxy via pilots. And many of them have failed, with the exception of the Trading ones.

The question that you should constantly ask yourself while developing the website is: "Why would someone want to come here, and spend lots of time pouring their data in?". Understanding that, is the key for your success.

After filling all the information in the forms for the 2 stars and the ELP, I felt that it was pretty showcase of my findings. But also, didn't imagine me coming back for it necessarily as I had the info available and in pictures. In fact, it took me like 30 minutes to properly set up and register them under the same system and organized. Truth, learning curve provided, I still have hundreds of objects under my belt that could register, and the proposal from the website is that it will take me days. All cool, but what am I getting in return? the same data in a different format? I need more than that.

So, my suggestion is, refine the filter or create new advanced ones, that allow grouping data in ways we couldn't otherwise. Knowing the value of planets -if the explorer has it available- would also shed lights in relationships between mass/type and data value, etc. Or just for more scientifically driven content! E.g. I want to filter ELP that are between 0.95 and 1.20 Earth Masses in the database, to then filter more for those with Oxigen level near 15.5% to 17.5%.

The reason why the trading websites are popular is because even when they demand entering lots of data from the markets, the benefit players get in return is to be able to organize data in a way that can be translated back into routes that will generate credits or rewards for then when searching a commodity.

The same will prove truth for exploration: offer a data base that we could manipulate in a way that can translate into interesting findings or credits and you'll be up for success.

Please, by all means take this in the lightest of tones. My aim is to be constructive with my comments because I can imagine the amount of work that is behind the website and would love to see it thriving in the community.

=-)

Thanks commander, some brilliant suggestions there.

So far I have been very conscious of the fact that entering the data is a pain and quite time consuming and so the focus has been to try and improve that side of things. In the next update there will be a discovery scanner which can read in all of the data straight from an image using OCR technology which I think will go someway to addressing that problem.

What I have never thought about though is your other points i.e. creating reasons for people to want to search through the data and benefits to them for doing so. Great ideas, thanks, definitely taken on board.

One day (hopefully, maybe...) an API will appear to allow data to be pulled directly from Elite (whether developers can get it direct from Frontier or need to write a tool for players to pull their own from the game and push to a url) and then things like this will really come into their own.

It was raised by the devs a while ago but I've heard nothing in ages. Fingers crossed it will happen sooner rather than later.

I am happy to have helped to see other perspective on the site.

I should have added that your effort to ease the data entering really comes thru. I could notice it and appreciated the help and well thought options and shows up of proper boxes when needed, making it a clear, elegant process.

But I think it takes one to know one, right? I speak on experience that sometimes, get so into the details of things that I forget why I was doing them in the first place and need to stay with the goal in focus! ;)

Will be following updates with excitement! I do believe in your project and your abilities to pull it off! ;)
