Community Event / Creation Elite Gamebook - Working Title: Salvation

Sounds interesting and I wish you luck - however I am not much of a reader (of fiction) so I am unable to suggest anything for you. Granted when I was younger I enjoyed the Steve Jackson books (which I think yours is emulating) but I do not know of any modern ones to compare with.

Thanks for the reply, Liqua. It is the same idea as the old Steve Jackson books but with more scope and detail to the rules, content, and story. I think the replies here and the pretty poor showing on Nathan's gamebook KS are proving helpful in illustrating that this isn't really an idea that will sell enough to justify my 4.5K commitment. Will see how things develop over the next week or so, though.

Sounds interesting. I've only ever bought 1 game book before but this sounds like the sort of thing I could use to get the younger members of the family into Elite.

That's an interesting idea. I was thinking of quite involved game mechanics but perhaps there's an options to offer basic and advanced rules so young kids can play it too...

I have never read this type of book/game. Can anyone point me to a freeware, preferably SciFi, gamebook that I can have a look at (downloadable). The concept sounds very interesting.

Edit: Thank you for the links and download. Looking forward to looking at this more closely.

Not sure about freeware, but you can get this Android version of the latest Ian Livingstone (who along with Steve Jackson was the granddaddy of the genre, at least as far as I recall) book for £1.

That's not SF though, which Gimi requested. Can I ask people to private mail Gimi rather than clutter up this thread further, with unrelated gamebook links, as I've already provided him with a free link to an old SF gamebook. Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Sounds very ambitious, I like most of the ideas though.

Where things like this can really work is in places where the computer game is weakest. Characters, working at a human level showing the individuals reactions to larger events. This isn't me saying you should do the other stuff, it wouldn't be elite if you didn't, but play to the strengths of the medium. I'll check back tomorrow when i'm more awake.

Thanks for the response and compliment, its appreciated!

I agree with you regarding character and content - its why I went with still keeping a plot* to the book and strong narrative drive, even though Elite (the videogame) is sandbox in its style of play. Further comments would be welcome, so look forward to discussing things later/earlier (???) with you. And anyone else! HINT!

* Assuming I actually commit to the project.

i think doing a KS for some of the funds would be a good idea, that will help generate interest.

My vague thoughts, rules should be kept to a minimum, it ain't D&D after all and they mustn't get in the way of the narrative.

Can you set links in ebooks? never thought of this before but direct links to the outcome pages makes sense. There is a program called quest or some such, could be worth a look. Of course it may have limitations and restrictions in regards to commercial and licensed properties.

I do a webcomic where I often use different perspectives to push the story forward, it seems to go down well so i think it will work for you.

A post I made appears to have disappeared so I'll try again...

So one of the questions I need to ask is just what Elite means to me. What is it?

What is Elite?
Trying to keep this to a 10-point high-level list. Elite, for me, is:

  • Trading
  • Space Combat
  • Competence levels - eg, the path to Elite
  • Pulse and Beam Lasers - there's a certain style to Elite weapons rather than 'pew pew' Star Wars lasers
  • Ships named after snakes - really strong design/look
  • Sandbox gaming
  • Exploration
  • Legal status
  • Different worlds - eg, tech level, agricultural/industrial, government types, etc
  • Ship upgrades

I think these things need to be intgrated into the plot, options/choices for the reader, and/or the rule system. Can they? Largely, I think so, yes.

The only point that will prove difficult is the sandbox nature of Elite. Books, and gamebooks, have a plot and Elite (with the exception of its missions) generally doesn't have a 'story mode' attached to it. I could design a gamebook without a plot - just building paragraphs based on trading, encounters, etc... But then the question would be "why not just play Elite, that does it better"? So, I think I still need a plot... I can simulate a sandbox environment to some degree by certain techniques used in other books and ideas I have. More thoughts on that later.

Right breaking down some ideas here, take this as you will.

Trading, not sure how you would do this effectively in a gameplay sense but it can certainly play a part in some decision making.

Space combat should be easy enough, the trick will be making it exciting.
this ties to the elite rating, the characters could start at a higher level and readers witness them advance but going from harmless to elite... don't make it look easy. give it meaning.

lasers etc, well that comes down to how you describe it.

I assuming you'll largely use ships from the games.

Sandbox... that will be tough, too open and the narrative will suffer, but lots of options will give the illusion weight.

Exploration, options for where to jump to, but it could get silly with too many options.

Legal status, very useful and well worth the effort. decisions must have consequences.

Different worlds, hell yes, this adds to the exploration element I'd love to feel that each location is distinct and adds something unique the the adventure.

Ship upgrades... hmmm like elite rating it depends on the time frame of the story. but yes as plot points it could work.

Okay after all that i largely got to the sameplace you did, i could delete this now but hey ho i went to the effort i may as well show it.

I think with hindsight I should have but I have no experience of getting something to market like this so was concerned that people wouldn't back me and also that I'd let them down. Also, Nathanael's also KSing a gamebook and I didn't want to step on his toes.

This amused me! ... But it is nice to see that my thought process made sense and is backed up by another person's. Best to be crazy in company rather than alone! :)

Hi Richard,

Sorry to hear that you've had a change of heart.

Thanks Nathan.

I think its just a lack of confidence to be honest and a desire to create an actual printed book which is an additional cost as I loathe ebooks due to the fact I can't read them - its why I haven't backed any of the Elite KS books.

I'm wondering if the Writer's Pledge could be purchased after the ED KS has run its course? That way I wouldn't get in the way of yours (as it would have finished) and I could properly gauge opinion.

EDIT: I've PM'd Michael to get his thoughts.

Sorry to see you pull out Rich. As for the pledge being available after the Kickstarter this is unknown. But get in touch with me when you're ready and we'll see what we can do,

Michael
