Elite gamers and those below

Before I started playing Elite on the C64, I was first introduced
by a guy who wrote down cryptic to me figures on paper, I thought
wow must be hard to play, and he was so cool, he said wait when
speaking on the phone I have to dock with this space station first.
The stuff he wrote down tho was prices on goods, in different systems,
and when I started playing it I did the same.

And today, I find myself in a position where I have the Beta, thinking about
a mouse keyboard approach.

But hmm, I have an old Saitek X36 that I used with FSX, throttle and stick.
Then even before starting the game I began to search, what controller to use, and ended up on youtube and so on.
After more searching I find voice attack sees videos of that, in my imagination I think of Picard, shields up, make it so!

All really good !! Love it, but

Even before I start to play the game, I will be outclassed.
In Wow(World of warcraft) I always did solo, was very nice to see other people and say hi and help eachother a bit.
But nowadays in wow or Eve online or any other mmo that has
run for a while you are SO FAR behind that it takes the fun out of it.

So where am I going, well I see guys on youtube flying like aces and with Voiceattack macros actions scripted to milliseconds,
with combos.

Maybe I am getting old : )
Of course I will play, and prob ask stupid questions on this forum, but
it just feels like the game has ended before I have started.
Of course the backers and all cred to them, they should have perks its not that.
Anyone else feeling this or am I alone in the galaxy ?

Anyway, that was my rant about Elite gamers and those below, but I bet
that I will enjoy it anyway, the sound effects are awesome, and if you guys hire Majel Barret, the computer voice in Star Trek TNG to verify command given via voice attack, I will fly forever.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Play the game at your own pace. Do the things you want to do. If you don't want to tangle with other players, you can always do Solo mode. Or better yet - run with some friends who can show you the ropes.

Bottom line - don't worry so much about skill levels and just concentrate on having fun. ;)

There is no end game. The competition or goal is really you against yourself. So play the final game in all its complexities the way you want it. Don't think of it as trying to keep up with the best pilots, think of it as flying with them, participating in the galactic events that will occur. And by all means, play multiplayer. Once the communications functions get perfected so it's easy to talk to people, it will be much better to have allies to help you, from friends or strangers, than to only play against NPC pilots. That's something none of us had with the first games, so use it, and enjoy the experience.

the good thing is that it's not even close to wow and eve, we are in npc galaxy and probably with right setup anyone can avoid most attacks, also by choosing places to visit and being cautious you will lower the risk significantly, that is if you still play in all group, because solo online might be most elite gamers choice.

i played original elite for a year or so and i now find much more fun in online world, yes, it's frustrating at times but also sometimes rewarding and very exciting, so we must choose if the frustration is worth that excitement.

and when i will get tired of general human beings i will just upgrade, take couple of my friends and head into the deep dark unknown where no humans ever stepped :)

p.s. in online games 90% of experience is brought to you by your friends, so choose them wisely and then you will surely have fun 90% of the time even in such harsh and unforgiving world of elite dangerous ;)

For every superstar you see flying FA Off on YouTube, there are a thousand mortals (like me), just muddling through, having fun. :)

Play the game you want to play, and enjoy it.

^^ THIS! ^^ Aaaand... I would need to quote all the other posters on this thread.

Do your own thing at your own pace and if you run into trouble online (getting blasted at distress signals, in combat zones, or if that one griefer just won't give up on trying to ruin your day), pull over to group or solo mode. It's easy like that.
I gaze in awe at players like Isinona (just one example for a top ace pilot) when watching his youtube videos, and sure I would love to become as good as he is. But I don't stress myself too much, I use videos like his to learn a few new tricks, I use them for inspiration. Same goes for forum threads that discuss the use of voice attack or certain stick layouts.

Just enjoy your time in space, and damn me, Elite Dangerous will offer a huge playground to have a good time on.

Hope to see you somewhere out there, travelling frolic through the dark (does anyone know "Death Angel"? ;) ) and if you feel like co-op'ing, you'll always find sweet people on the forum (I would jump in if you knocked on my door ;) ).

I don't think E: D will ever become a stat/equip-race like WoW is (oh, my dmg meter says you're crap, you can't group with us). So relax and enjoy!

I am currently playing mouse/keyboard. I am an old guy with hand problems. I am able to play my own game at my pace. What I would suggest is spending time in the single player missions to get the controls working how you like. The default setting didn't suit me at all. Once you are happy try the on line mode. If you find the intervention too much drop into solo online. I have spent several weeks there practicing combat.

I am at the stage now where I am never going to be an ace fighter, but I am okay.

I believe HOTAS and Voice Attack would take me to another level, but at the end of the day I am time limited.

So my point is its possible to play this game and enjoy it without needing all the addons.

about fa off i can only say one thing: i know a really good dogfight pilot and once i asked him when he turns FA OFF. the answer was - "never, because it's not needed", FA OFF do not make you better combatant at all, that statement is false, there are just things that are done easier with FA on and things that are done easier with FA off, so find "your things and your way", that's usually what annoys me in online games like nhl and alike, there are 99% of players who perfect one move and do that single move all game long, but here you must do little bit more that one move, also if you can't succeed then your brain is in your head - think of different approach or just run away, there always are cmdrs that are flying better than you and cmdrs that are flying worse, not because you can't be the best, but because it's more like rock/paper/scissors approach.

also never forget that you are not obliged to fly alone, get some good fighters with you and have fun in a group, one pilot can do only so much alone ;)

I too came a long way from the original Elite. I haven't touch a joystick in some 10 years or so, maybe more, while playing a little fun multiplayer space game called JUmpgate.
Like Elite, in JG it was all down to actual player piloting skill. Everyone has there limits, and the important thing is that yours allow you to have fun. And its not only light speed reflexes and hawk eye aim... you can also use your brain, as you can see in some great videos around.

As for the Voiceattack thing and other controls... well, i dont think my wife will tolerate me shouting at the computer while the kids are asleep... But anyway, that sort of thing you get familiar with in a couple of days or weeks.

Now... the oculus thing... once it goes commercial... that's tempting.

Just really to echo what everyone else hss said.

You can get a feel for things in a solo or private group first and then see how you. I've been playing since the first daybof alpha and thre are loads of people that have comd in since that would beat me hands down.

The great thing about this game that anyone can play one way or another.

See you out there! I won't shoot if you don't :)

I love the idea that there's so much more to the game than just shootshootshoot. Elite really caters to players who are not all about twitch reflexes. And older folks with experience can still outdo younglings.

yeah, especially while we (old folks) are in majority (at least according to the age poll) :)
