Elite... GOOD or BAD your view counts!!

Ok guys so here is the deal..I was thinking of doing a poll but thats too simple a view, theres so many factors to why this game is good.... or god forbid bad:S

Lets be frank here.

Due to all the posts threads screen shots pictures vids damocles etc... all what you have seen.
Do you think elite dangerous to be a (flash in the pan) a game that is hyped up to the hilt and will never deliver the expectation it set out at kickstarter or
a masterpiece of modern software progamming

So all the people who think this is going to fail speak your mind now!
Having said that I am quite optimistic. but lets hear your views!

Dont hold back vent your fury or optimism!

Do you think this is going to be one stop shooter or a game that stands the test of time.. a ground breaking piece of programming simular to the first elite or a damp visual squid that fails to impress anyone.... fire away!!

All I can say is ... it has a procedurally simulated "galaxy" for god sake! (Not that I'm religious but you get the point. :p) That in itself blows everything out of the water in my mind. The rest, be it good or bad is extra fluff that I will come to love or not love because it is ... Elite! (A young boys wet (now man) dream of getting to the stars! :D It is the closest thing we'll ever get to getting to those stars in this lifetime and that ... can only ever be seen as a success.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
It has the potential to be a classic. Saying anything else is pure speculation. ;)

Elite Dangerous will be a fantastic game - if it offers the freedom, simplicity and endless space of the original Elite.

By the way: I want no coloured nebulae wherever I look. I hope there will be lightyears of deep and dark space between the planets and solar systems.

Dunno .. left my crystal ball in the UK

Not picking on you specifically PacalB (as I like your posts and you're quite the Elite evangelicalist) but PG isn't a magic bullet that automatically makes everything great . Some games use PG to generate "universes" but they are still pants (Minecraft to name one - ultimate sandbox yawnfest to me).

I have high hopes for ED, which is why I backed it to the level that I did, but it wasn't because of PG ;)

I think 1 thing continuously forgotten - is " It's a Game ", It is a game called Elite, it brings back memories for some - just like the re-make of Duke Nukem did for others , and some of those others might be in this forum.

If they brought out a massively multiplayer online game - of Frogger - I'd probably enjoy it, just for the memories :)

Do not get me wrong - there will be many that do not get it and will not enjoy it.

But those of us that do, will be thrilled with the result - as again at the end of the day - it's a game.

Just saying :) -

Live long and prosper.

You hit the nail on the head here Liqua, I only hope that I'm not expecting too much from the game and then on release find myself disappointed with the result. All will start to become clear when they start Alpha testing.

Well put Sparticus, this is how is see it...

This game will only appeal to a certain audience, it is the size of that audience that will dictate the success of the game and if the game is as 'immersive' as the FD team are aiming for then that should help dictate how long the game remains successful for within is targeted audience.

I've been very excited about this game since I first heard about the kickstarter campaign and as December closes in on us I'm finding myself becoming more and more anxious - I've had this week off of work, I cant wait to get back so I can occupy my mind with something else as the suspense is killing me!

I can only hope that Alpha testing starts earlier in the month rather than later.

How could anyone possibly give an accurate answer to this? We still haven't seen any up to date real time game footage yet.

Too many negative waves man, too many negative waves.....

David said, this is the game, he always wanted to do. With stunning visuals and incredible gameplay. For my part, I can not say, if ED will be a good game, but it is on the right road for that. The advantage of being a long-term game, is that there will be updates and improvements and optimizations. So, if the base game is bad, it will go towards the good, if it is good, he will go towards the very good, if it is very good, it will go towards the Excellence and if it is excellent, it will go towards ... But I think in all cases, with the updates, it will not become less good.

I don't think it'll be a flash in the pan, I think it'll at least have a strong cult following that gives it some longevity. I don't think it will be viewed by the entire gaming community as a masterpiece, simply because that is a very tall order for any game. That said, I have backed to the tune of 150ukp, which is 5 times the price of a normal game, so I clearly have good hopes for the game.

The risk for us is that our nostalgia trip blinds us and we overhype the game, which can only lead to disappointment.

Graphically, what I have seen has not filled me with awe but it's also not bad in any way. Still, these are early graphics and I am sure we can expect a lot more from the released product. It's very good it supports the Rift, that's good forward thinking. Support for 3DVision would align itself well with that community also which is a highly loyal one, supportive of all 3D products that are executed well.

I think the main issue for ED on release will be the multiplayer aspects, all games suffer in this area on release and the more ambitious the game is in that area, the more you see the devs frantically trying to fix it before the community ditches the game.

All in all, whilst I don't see how ED can ever match the original experience of Elite - at its time of release was truly groundbreaking and large scale but of course is now simplistic and repetitive - I am hoping for something that I keep coming back to months or perhaps even years after release, like Skyrim, Fallout 3, Baldur's Gate, X, Oblivion, XCom. Games that might be flawed but get under your skin.

+1 this

Way to early to tell if it will be good or bad.

My only concerns are I thought ED was going to be a single player game with a multi-player option. But its clear to me know its the other way around with multi-player getting all the focus forcing the speed limit, removal speed up time option, and non Newtonian physics on the single player game.

I also hope the colourful nebula shown in the music video are limited to very small number of systems or preferably only show up if special false colour filters are installed turned on.

All I want is FE2 updated to take advantage of the latest tech with a few more bells and whistles.

I was intending to up my pledge to the £150 founder but I think I will wait until I get to play the beta.

The only thing I know I DON'T want the game to be is:

Too approachable.

Don't get me wrong, everyone should be able to play, but let's face it: Elite is Elite. We have every right to be... elitist about this.

So, in case someone important is reading this (yeah right;)) don't try to reverse what happened between Elite and Frontier. Yes, Frontier and First Encounter where WAY more complicated than Elite.
But hey were also kind of perfect- beside the bugs.

Let's keep some healthy competition on between gamers and game.

No one want to see full of Elite rating guys, as much as we all hated to see everyone becoming easily Jedi/Sith in Star Wars Galaxies.
