Hardware & Technical Elite in 1080p and 144Hz or 1440p and 60Hz with GTX1060

Hey guys,

I am about to get my new PC started and finally play Elite again. I got myself this config:

ASUS Z270I Motherboard
ASUS Strix GTX1060 6G
16GB 3000MHz DDR4 Corsair RAM
i7 7700K overclocked

Now at last I want to get a monitor, I will get a 34" 21:9 monitor. The only thing I am thinking about right now is, should I get a 1080p monitor with 144Hz and will the 1060 run the game with max settings in 144fps or should I get a 1440p monitor with 60Hz-100Hz and then can the 1060 run the game with max settings with 60fps to 100fps.

Maybe some already have experiences with this.

Thanks

I think the gtx 1060 will run ED just fine on all these displays. My old gtx 970 did just fine. I have played on a 34" 21:9 1080p 144hz, 28" 4k 60hz, and a 34" 21:9 1440p 60hz, and I'll tell you that for me, I consider the 34" 3440x1440 60hz the single best upgrade I have ever made, and that includes going from a gtx 970 to a gtx 1080.

I going to be blunt. I don't understand why anyone would buy a high-end CPU/chipset/RAM combination and then only buy a 1060 (especially if you are wanting a 3440x1440 monitor running at 60FPS up). Makes no sense to me. When building a gaming PC the most expensive component should be the GPU. If you are on a budget then surely it's better to get an i5 (say 6600 or 6600k) and use the money saved to upgrade the 1060 to a 1070.

EDIT: and just like the above poster, I also consider my 3440x1440 75Hz monitor to be the best upgrade I've done. And I say that as an Oculus Rift owner.

Given that the GTX 1060 is more or less the equal of the previous generation GTX 980 (especially in 6Gb form) it actually makes a huge amount of sense, unless you can get the 980 / 980ti for cheaper. While it can't quite do QHD it should manage 1440p with ease.

That said, given the option, I would have gone for the i5 and the 1070, while the 1060 is the sweet spot for gaming power over cost, the i5/1070 would have been a faster overall combination for anything & everything but possibly video editing.

Set me back 500 quid but worth every penny.

Yeah, granted I did not have a monitor with that much real estate, but to be honest, I was very underwhelmed when I went from 16:9 1080p to 4k. That move from 4k to the 21:9 2k curved though...THAT was a game changer. Gaming on a 16:9 now feels very cramped and limited.

I have the same monitor, but I think it is a pretty standard affair. Reasonable for the price, but not great by any means. The sharpness of the 4k does help to a degree, but mine has ghosting, poor black level, too glossy finish when any lights are on in the room and colours are not especially vivid. I am still using it at the moment, but interested in changing over an Ultra Wide in the near future as per the OP. I actually don't run ED on this monitor though as I use an OLED TV which is excellent especially when looking at it next to the Phillips display.

I am also interested in impressions on if the substantial price jump to 1440p/2160p on these Ultra Wides are worth it or if refresh rate is more important. Price on some of these monitors is staggering though, so seriously been wondering if something half the price @ 1080p and good refresh is the better option till prices come down.

Not seeing any kind of issues you are finding and I spend most of my time editing photographs on it.
You are running through the display port @ 60hz I presume?

Have you checked your GPU gives the monitor full colour range instead of dynamic?

I got the 43" version last spring & was really impressed by everything, notably the vivid colours that my old Sony Bravia couldn't even come close to.

What is your budget? This one has all the bells & whistles if your wallet can hang [yesnod] : https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG348Q/

I've been researching this lately as I'm building a new PC myself and came to a simple conclusion: making compromises on monitor never ends well.
It's something you'll be looking at a lot.
But the problem with monitor is, if you go bigger/better, it requires a good GPU to follow it.

1080p -> 1440p gives you sharper graphics and more screen, but hits your GPU harder
60Hz -> 144Hz gives you smoother graphics, but hits your GPU even harder
144Hz + G-sync gives you smoother graphics with less impact on GPU thanks to G-sync, but hits your wallet hard
1440p+144Hz+G-sync is the best option, but hits your wallet the hardest

Considering all that, I'm not sure your 1060 will like any of these options.
Also, I'd pick a monitor with IPS panel over TN any time, even if it means lower refresh rate and resolution.

How far away will you be seated from the screen? On that screen 1080p is fine from a distance, but when you sit up close I'd got for a higher res.
