You should see the lengths people go to playing Ingress.
It's a geolocation game so where you physically are is the same in-game.
I personally have traveled across the UK, stayed in hotels hundreds of miles from home, met with strangers and stood at Lizard Point in Cornwall at 1AM on a cold January night... all to link virtual lines between locations and claim as much geographic area as possible for my team.
You can only link to another location if you have a key (token) for it and you can only get them if someone has physically been there and gained the key.
One example saw a Russian player fly thousands of km east to Siberia, then catch a helicopter over the river to get to a particular city and claim a particular location. The portal at the location expires in 7 days without recharging so it's against the clock. He then went back to Moscow and handed the key over to another player traveling to Washington DC in the US. That player handed over to another player heading across to the west coast. Then they met with another player heading to Alaska. The key got to Alaska from Siberia THE LONG WAY AROUND in less than 6 days and Alaska were within range to recharge the portal, resetting the clock. The aim was to link locations in an unbroken chain around the world, which was successful.
I'm not saying Elite is any less intense or rewarding. I am saying that people can go to incredible lengths "for a game". It's great!
