Elite - Is it viable in a few years - Do we have a trial ?

Hi There,

Can somebody please point me to a relevant article before I splash out on this game ?

I understand that it's always online and the DRM means that even solo play we have to have it connected to the servers - that is not an issue for me.

I will be walking into this game know that and to be honest, don't care either way. I want to relive my childhood from the BBC!!!

My concern is that if I pay into this, the game seems to be 100% free so how will it continue to be supported and looked after by the company that runs it for us 1000's of players with only a trickle of money coming in from new purchases.

I am well aware how much datacentres cost to run and all the hosting tied up with it. The support staff from a ticket poiint of view as well as a game backend point of view.

Is this game viable in say two years time from peoples opinion or am I likely throwing money away - is there a trial available or an I better off looking at an established game live Eve online ?

Thanks.

There's a major expansion planned for around 12 months from now - planetary landings and there are micro transations. I would also suggest they could follow the school model and sell ships (hopefully cheaper than SC) and their overhead is quite low as there's only one server to maintain.

we really want this? to make it near p2w model?

Nothing pay to win about expansions. I for one am not terribly interested, by default, by landing on planets. I won't be at a disadvantage to those that go for it, I will just have parts of the game not accessible. There isn't really a "win" in Elite anyway. So you have a "pay for the features you want, don't pay for the ones you don't want" and that is a good way to go, if you ask me.

I think they're planning to release expansion dlc's every 6-12 months. They also have custom ship skins microstansactions. They might add more ships after the 30 that'll be available for microtransactions, just an estimate by me though.

Buy it at £39.99 you can't go wrong, the memories that will come flooding back from your BBC B days will justify the cost in the first day alone, there is plenty to do to keep an Elite player happy for months and months if not years.

Worst case if you only get a few months entertainment out of it you will still have had plenty of fun for your money, my advice is let FD run their business while you play the game.

Obviously if you read the forums you will see a mix of opinions, sure there are people with gripes and wants and needs, but on the whole the forums seem to me to a fairly positive place with active debate. Compare that to other game forums that are filled with hate and bile and I think it reflects that Elite Dangerous is a good place to be and is certainly worth £39.99.

Its not an mmo in the common sense of the term. The server technology is largely peer to peer, and theyve already said that if anything were to happen to FD they would release the server source code so that it would continue to live on via fan run servers. If you were a childhood Elite fan go get it, like now, you won't be disappointed. It seems like almost all of us 80s kids just love it, most of the criticism seems to be coming from the younger crowd.

Frontier do many other games that provide income to the company generally. The kickstarter provided the funds to make the game. As for the status of those I do not know. The assumption is that merchandise, skin and decal sales will provide a trickle income as well as the ongoing client sales. Boosted no doubt by future expansions.

It's only P2W if non-paying players can't realistically access the content. Take Planetside 2 for example. It's a F2P-game in which you can buy weapons for real-life money, but you can also obtain those very same weapons using the in-game currency you get from playing the game. The only difference is that it takes a little longer to afford it with the in-game currency - but it's definitely possible. I've bought three weapons that way myself.

Do you have a source for the ETA on Planetary Landings? It's not that I don't trust you; I'd just like to have some sort of confirmation for future reference.

I would say give it a couple months if you are on the fence. We should be seeing some additions for multiplayer ,etc within that time. I bought it once it went retail because I was anxious to start doing what I can, knowing they have long term plans for it. I respect the fact they wanted to do this without the interference of any large publishers, because they can be invasive s in the creative process, and it would not have been good for this title.

Doesn't hurt to be an informed consumer though. ;)

I doubt that will happen. They did talk a bit about selling credits for cash but everyone on the forums suffered from a head explosion and I think they changed their mind.

That sounds perfect. I will buy 200,000,000 credits for £10 please.

Not really. If that was an option then this would be no better than candy crush

I believe that Frontier intend to sell the model/programming technology as a means of future funding etc. Can't remember the techicalities unfortunately, but there was a path for taking this forward. There will be things to buy, but they won't influence the game per se (I believe)
