Elite - Is it viable in a few years - Do we have a trial ?

Really?

I'd be amazed if this were all run on one server.

That has been my understanding. Like I said earlier a lot of the work relies on peer to peer tech. You do realize its currently a 32 player max per "shard" right? Its very interesting the way it works, if you're interested do a search you should be able to find some info.

i am an outspoken member who has issues with what isnt here....and id buy this game again in a heartbeat its the genre ive always had a softspot for

Multiple servers, but we switch between them dynamically and they are all AWS cloud-virtual anyway

Buy it at £39.99 you can't go wrong, the memories that will come flooding back from your BBC B days will justify the cost in the first day alone, there is plenty to do to keep an Elite player happy for months and months if not years.

Worst case if you only get a few months entertainment out of it you will still have had plenty of fun for your money, my advice is let FD run their business while you play the game.

Sold, on the basis of this comment alone. Although I want far more than a few months - it made me consider that if it does go away after say six months I'd have missed the boat completely in terms of the experience.

Thanks to all that responded as well.

I shall see you out there...

plus one to the above...
when i see some of the stuff my son plays on his xbox one that he gets quickly bored with and finishes. i have had my moneys worth many times over since i started at the beginning of B1

I heard they will sell time

braben himself said they were looking into this possibility (a 2012 interview, can google easily)

i wonder if they will sell credits, now THAT would be a time saver so i can blaze my own trail and not grind for months

That sounds perfect. I will buy 200,000,000 credits for £10 please.

Not really. If that was an option then this would be no better than candy crush

I dont agree, if you have time and will to grind those credits good for you

i have 2 jobs, a kid and im lucky to get an hour of elite a day

id like to be able to experience exploring the galaxy in an anaconda vessel before 6 years pass thanks

and no, i make trade runs for 1mill credits, but that is not the only thing i wanna do during my one hour playtime

so yes please to sell credits

I believe that Frontier intend to sell the model/programming technology as a means of future funding etc. Can't remember the techicalities unfortunately, but there was a path for taking this forward. There will be things to buy, but they won't influence the game per se (I believe)

Yes; licensing the "Cobra engine", I know I heard this in a 'IPO report'...

It's only P2W if non-paying players can't realistically access the content. Take Planetside 2 for example. It's a F2P-game in which you can buy weapons for real-life money, but you can also obtain those very same weapons using the in-game currency you get from playing the game. The only difference is that it takes a little longer to afford it with the in-game currency - but it's definitely possible. I've bought three weapons that way myself.

Do you have a source for the ETA on Planetary Landings? It's not that I don't trust you; I'd just like to have some sort of confirmation for future reference.

I'm not too good at giving 'quoted data' in Forum messages. But Ashley Barber and Michael Brooks in a discussion (4/4/2013), stated SPL (seamless planetary landings), will occur (barring unexpected problems), in one years time after release of the game.

Type in Google 'Elite Dangerous planet landings'; one of the first responses will give you the discussion...Furthermore David Braben made further references to it in a couple of videos. In one video he says in effect; asteroids, moons, and airless rocky planets will be land-able (first) for the purpose of mining, before other planet bodies. So I believe we can take from this statement that SPL's will occur in a phased fashion; The first phase would be the airless moons and rocky planetary bodies.

@VeryHarmless

Consider this simple fact: Frontier Developments has been in business for thirty years. David Braben, producer of Elite: Dangerous wrote the original Elite for the BBC in your childhood.

Ask a simple question - what makes you think that after thirty years of success Frontier Developments is going to fold down this game any time soon?

Yep, these forums are so quiet, nobody is playing the game! It's like a graveyard in here, sheesh!

Forums are quiet, because everyone is in the game... =p

There's a major expansion planned for around 12 months from now - planetary landings and there are micro transations. I would also suggest they could follow the school model and sell ships (hopefully cheaper than SC) and their overhead is quite low as there's only one server to maintain.

No FD shud not sell ships, 17$ usd for a gold skin was crazy enuf..all assets shud b purchasable in game...
