Folks,

A lot of the debates on the forum at the moment follow the same pattern:

Party A - Elite needs more content / I'm bored / Add more features / The game will die soon.

Party B - Elite has always been this way, and new stuff is coming.

Party A - Yeah, but that's only cosmetic stuff, and it won't add more depth

Party B - Elite is not your game.

So here's the thing, folks. It seems to me that half of us are happy with Braben's concept of Elite with emphasis on the cosmetic and the astronomical, and the other half would like to see improvements to the gameplay.

Vote 1 - if in your opinion, Elite needs more development of playable substance (missions, multi player, story, more content, whatever) in order to be successful

Vote 2 - if, in your opinion, Elite is fine as it is and the development needs only to be cosmetic (bug fixes, deck-walking, planetary landing, station walking)

There is no 3.

I am betting that this poll will be pretty much 50:50. Maybe 60:40 tops.

And perhaps this will show that both sides of this coin have equally strong views on what Elite can be, and perhaps, with our suggestions and DB's team's work, it can be everyones' game.

Elite hasn't always been this way, and what we have is about halfway to what was talked about, debated, discussed, planned and specced over the last year/18 months.

Indeed. And I don't think anyone knows exactly what has been specced in those discussions, except the development team.

How the hell can be "Braben's vision" in opposition to getting new content? Does David actually has a vision that no content should be added to the game post-launch?

Plus, everyone really needs just to chillax. The game came out at unfortanate time for unfortunate reasons (ie coming out 30 years after the first one), when everyone is away from office for holidays. But I expect full buzz from the Frontier office staring from 5th of January and lots of things will be looked into.

Not voting in the poll, as the answer options are loaded and biased.

Had you left it just at Being true to Brabens vision I would have voted that way, but the qualifier stating his view would be purely cosmetic and/or in direct conflict with adding content obviously skews it.

I vote that they develop more content and the people who voted for option 2 here get an in-game option to opt out of the new content.

If Brabens vision is the DDF stuff then I'd be more than happy if the whole DDF thing was a pie in the sky exercise and it never gets fulfilled or major features get continuously cut then I'd be less happy.

It doesn't state that "his view would be purely cosmetic", it states even if. Which is a conditional not a qualifier.

i cant vote because an option for me is not there. I think there is content, at least compared to other games on release year

I completely agree with this. There's a lot of tension around (for some odd reason) and this is trying to show that actually we're all on the same side here.

I can't vote because the option "Having ready content is for the best of the game, don't like them? Don't run them." is missing.

Regardless you clearly biased your answer options to sway people into choosing the A, which invalidates the results of the poll from the get go.

Lesson learned.

Well, if I did it wasn't intentional...though my vote is option 1 so I am hardly unbiased.

To be honest this stems from another thread where I was told "elite was not my game" because I expressed a preference to content over cosmetics.

I'm really not sure I get this poll at all. FD have never said there is no more content / gameplay features coming. Quite the opposite. Wings for example, planetary landings will be more than cosmetic I would wager. To me the debate focuses more around open sandbox play v linear story driven play with clear objectives. I think that is where FD have the definite view of sandbox. THe second area perhaps is multiplayer, where FD gave a definite view that being a lone wolf is very much teh expected play style, with player interaction as a fun aside... said another way, it shouldn't ever be necessary to group with other players to carry out missions etc.

To me it's the two above concepts that polarise people, as an open sandbox means you kinda get a toolbox of functions etc and you leverage those to play your own way. The multiplayer via co-habitation rather than game mechanics to force grouping up means that there is no massive endgame bosses to group up and destroy which does fit in the sandbox view but does leave some MMORPG fans wondering what the point is.

I like what FD have done and a look forward to new content as it comes on line, both cosmetic and gameplay wise. Just my 10c

Interesting post. +1.

Agreed. And I'd like to make a point here: changes are not the same as new content. I think that everyone wants more content, David included given all that he's said to date. Most of the contentious threads I've seen are people who expected something different from what the game is today and want FD to change it to fit their own desires regardless of the fact that the designers have built things a certain way for good reason, and who have found a bit of the game which they don't enjoy so again they want it changed regardless of those who might.

Development is not free, and changes are not cheap. If these "just change X" and "why can't you just do Y" threads were all actioned we would end up with *no new content* and see the game bumping along from one set of compromises to another. This is why I have often argued against changes in other threads: not because I hate the idea of change but I don't see anything inherently better in one situation over another, and the more that FD take such threads as majority opinion the more they are likely to carry out these tinkering-around-the-edges changes and delay new content as a result.

You make your own content. That is the purpose of this game and they won't change that. Go play something that holds your hand with sparkly little paths to your next quest.
