Hardware & Technical Elite just cost me some more money

I have been with Elite Dangerous since Premium Beta ( Found the game a few weeks earlier, watched Fireytoad on Twitch).

So i Bought into Premium Beta. cost $150.00 USD
i had just bought a HOTAS for another game (which may or maynot actually be a game by 2017) cost $300.00
found i needed a new video card.. got a GTX 970. cost $380.00 USD
decided the desk wasnt cutting it for ergonomics with the HOTAS so bought a Obutto.. Cost $435.00 USD
decided to up my Memory from 8 gigs of 1600 to 16 gigs of 1866 ram. Cost. $157.00 USD

have been toying with the idea of buying a Oculus Rift for a few months now.. but the resolution isnt there yet i feel.. so

I just ordered a new 27" 2560x1440 monitor off of Monoprice for $300.00

so far my cost to play a single game is $1722.00 USD

sad thing is when Oculus does come out with their 1440 sets i'll probably buy that as well as a second GTX 970 which will set me back yet another $630.00 or so.

being a Geek and a Gamer is getting expensive.

If we don't spend money in our hobby, well, WTH we must working for ? ;)

It is at least more of an investment than spending it all on wild parties. Even marginally better for your health as well.

You're still doing fine.... :D I think we will get a LOT of mileage out of this game, so doing it right is worth it.

Beta about a month ago $75
MSI GT72 laptop w/NVIDIA GTX980M $2600
x52 Pro HOTAS $180
Custom 36x12 laptop tray so I can play in my recliner $120
TrackIR $170

I too am waiting on the retail Oculus with better resolution.

(starts checking internet prices on a flight suit and helmet...) :D

well hell, i forgot to add in the cost of Track Ir5 and Voice attack.

atleast i dont have to buy a flight suit as i still have several of them from when i was in the Marine Corps. now to find me a secondhand Flight helmet that doesnt cost an arm and a leg.... and i wonder if i can mod the Oculus to fit the front of the Helmet like a pair of flip down NV goggles.

Yeah.. welcome to the club.

I tried to keep it cheap, but i just HAD TO buy a HOTAS (X52, THAT THING IS A BEAST!!!) and order a head tracking device. ATM Elite has cost me 60€ for the game, 130€ for the HOTAS and ~50€ for the EDTracker+DelanClip (please dont ask why both :p)
Lucky me i had already a powerful gaming system with 3x 24" @120Hz monitors, or i would have bought this too just for this game :D

such an expensive game ^^

Once rift goes consumer I'll be buying one as well. Some of these techs for the longest time I was like, they're cool, but I really don't need world of warcraft in a more 3d environment with head tracking, or many other game. (I haven't played wow in forever but you get my drift)

Then finally a few space games came out, and I was like, alright, maybe I need some of these gadgets, but none of them head useful proper interfaces that were in game like Elite Dangerous does. Doom was close with their on screen mouse to interfaces with objects in the game, on displays. Everything else felt their own little menu should pop up that wasn't "built into the environment".

Then I saw elite dangerous and gasped. Now I keep looking at things like track IR and rift and I'm like, I need dis. Then I see ways to setup a virtual cockpit, and I'm like, I need dis too. Then I see software to run on tablets to make control panels, and now, I need dis.

I also haven't purchased a hotas yet, been hesitant on putting out 200$ for one. but, I know I need dis. If I buy that though, it has to set in the same positions as the visual in cockpit, so then, I'm going to need a new chair, or build some sort of addon that I can mount these objects to it.

Ideas?

  • X55 Rhino
  • Rift DK2
  • Buttkicker Gamer 2
  • Second 760GTX
  • 2x additional 1080p monitors

Considering a 4K monitor next year.

Yea, this is a pretty expensive hobby.

So your current mother board, case and PSU can all handle the extra needs of SLI? If not that might add to the total.

Yep, I bought an x52 pro, another 8 gig of ram, a new Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970, loads of cooler master cooling (fans etc.) to help with the overclocking, and a brand new 28" monitor. All for Elite. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who is nuts lol

Just promise you won't tell the wife ;)
