Elite just got Dangerous!!

Hey Cmdrs!

So, I've just traded in my Cobra after much deliberation of whether I should keep it a bit longer and grind out the extra credits to have the Asp as well as the Cobra. In the end I decided that the Asp and the Cobra were too similar in what I wanted from them so decided to get the Asp a bit earlier. My Cobra was worth around 6 mil with all the upgrades and I had credits of around a million so had quite a small buffer.

Now, I have got this little rare commodity trade route that for a small tonnage ship is perfect, around 1.5 mil credits an hour and that includes the waiting for the stock to refresh. (chose 2 systems that have a decent refresh rate of anything from 5 to 18 units every 9-10 minutes so the loading takes around 20 minutes each stop. Of course bigger trade ships would laugh at that return I imagine but for my little 50 tonne Cobra, it was perfect for me to earn a steady income, explore and have te occasional interdiction on my route.

Now, things were different, My Asp, as gorgeous as she is is pretty much stock and a stock Asp isn't much to shout about but oh..... the potential! I could quite easily have run off to solo mode for a couple of days, trade my little backside off running things here there and everywhere but I decided, i'd stick to my little route, rare commodities, the loading time is a little longer now I have extra cargo space but the payoff is pretty nice and all the while those stations restock at a decent pace I don't mind being docked at a station for 30 minutes or so while i browse the forums and check other things like routes and potential routes, upgrades etc, I'm not in a race, not fussed about optimal credits per hour etc I'm not a trader, I'm a chancer, At the moment, trading is working out for me just enjoying my rare commodity trading and generally finding my own way out in the universe.

I'm particularly excited about the events happening in parts of the galaxy and I am taking a keen interest and may have to pay a visit to Lugh and Jita in the very near future.

So, anyway, the dangerous bit....just on the last leg of my journey with a cargo hold of rares with a street value of approximately 1.5 mil in my pretty much stock Asp (apart from the FSD) when I get interdicted 3km from the station i'm due to dock at. I throttle down, expecting the usual npc system vessel, only this time it's a Cmdr.

'Excellent' i think to myself, time to get to grips with the comms (had a couple Commanders try to communicate with me last night and for the life of me couldn't figure out how to reply) Apologies to those 2 guys last night, I wasn't being rude, just struggling to reply, way too clunky for my liking.

I'm scanned and then promptly i'm fired upon. no warning, no 'drop some goodies Mr and you can go' Immediately, I've deployed my hardpoints and tried to boost up behind the Cobra. Now, at the moment, I am a virtual sitting duck in the Asp, in my Cobra of only 4 or so hours ago I reckon I would have enjoyed this battle. I can't out turn him and i am trying like mad to get away from his lasers. Boost, turn, throttle down, blue zone, nope, just can't get behind so now its time to try and get away with my cargo, that's all i am thinking about, I can comfortably afford the insurance but I can't really afford losing 1 and a half mil of cargo.

Mind made up, i boost away, and keep on boosting, jinking, retract hardpoints and start to fire up the FSD.... man that thing takes some time when you want it to just fire up already. put 4 pips to my shields as I am taking a lot of fire and then bam, shields out, something malfunctions, i'm sure it's a throttle malfunction, great,, no maneuverability.

'i'm dead' i think to myself, thinking of the lost haul, the insurance, probably gonna cost me around 1.7 mil and then my canopy is breached. with my shields out i switch all pips to system and just well, wait til the inevitable

the FSD starts its countdown after finally getting ready... 4...3...2...1 throttle up to engage..... miraculously i move the slider up and the beautiful vision as you are about to enter hyperspace. i look at my HUD and see 7% hull.

this was the single most thrilling experience I've had in a game for some time, 5 minutes of adrenalin fuelled, heart thumping action. mostly of me trying to get the hell out of dodge in my naked Asp but thrilling all the same.

The damage cost me 178k to repair...result i think to myself as I hit the commodity market and sell my cargo and net around 1.6 million.

This is why 'No story' is meaningless in a game of this type. the players create the story, I am my own storyteller and I take part in the stories of others.

Now the Cmdr who attacked me could have made a fair bit of credits, I would have begrudgingly jettisoned a few tonnes had he asked, and when he docked would have been pleasantly surprised at the price this station pays for this particular good!!

I won't ever play in Solo mode because encounters like this bring the world alive..... Open play...all the way..

Elite just got Dangerous....

Keep on your toes out there Cmdr... there be some 'n'ere do wells' out there only to happy to put a hole in your cargo hold. I luckily scraped out with not much but some gaffer tape holding my ship together!! :)

How'd you turn everything on your user interface purple?

i hope 1 large and two medium beam lasers coupled with two other guns may be a little incentive to stay polite :)

i'll dig you out the link once i land, its on the forums, or check my history, i posted there once or twice

Edit, happy camper :p

3 m profit isn't to bad and i invested some back into the ship :D not counting the extra couple million i done doing missions while loading up the hold and trading with 1 system jumps

@Rubix Great story! This is what separates an Elite from the cookie cutter MMOs. Go all in with the chance to strike it rich or lose it all in one ill-timed collision.

Good story. Pity the villain was an idiot, though. Fair play if he wants to be a murderer but he could have made a huge profit if he'd been a real pirate.

Thanks for sharing - the intro was a bit long, I was wondering where you were going with it...but it was worth it in the end.

I love your positive attitude but can't help but wonder if you would have felt the same, or shared the story, if you had died with all that lovely cargo :)

Ive gone against everything I said before release and have been playing in open since release, I was planning to play in group mode because I dont get a lot of time to play, so will be well behind other players, but then I do like a challenge.

It certainly adds a little tension to the game!

care to share? ( i ask shamelessly) I have 36 tonnes on my cobra and am looking for ways to make a decent profit. how much cash do I need to start the trade route you will tell me? (mind control activated).

I loved this sort of stuff in Eve and can't wait to experience it in Elite. The risk vs reward and chance to lose everything to a stupid mistake or random player encounter is what makes these games great, and makes space feel like space.

I've been playing Open for a few days, and in that time I've been interdicted and attacked by NPCs about 25 times and by humans zero times. Just saying.
