Elite Just Isn't A Fun Place to "Be"

I've been thinking about immersion and what keeps me in games lately, and the one thing I've found is this:

Games I really love are fun places to "be". I love games like Minecraft, X3: Albion Prelude, Grand Theft Auto, Skyrim, and the old space sim game Evochron Mercenary. These are big, open worlds with lots of freedom given to the player. Some aspects of these games get grindy or repetitive, but it's ok--the world is a pleasant place to be in, and a nice escape from reality.

MC, GTA, and Skyrim are obviously much different than Elite, but the things that keep me involved are the topography and the feeling of exploration--there's a lot to look at, and little hidden things to find, and the general sense that something ELSE is waiting for me beyond the next hill, or in that cave, or down that street.

X3 and Evochron are more relatable to Elite--open space games, but the difference is that the universe is convincing, and interesting. X3 has tons of ships flying around doing jobs, and if you look at the world at a macro perspective, you can see that things are, in some way, all contributing to a greater whole. The Elite "background simulation" completely fails to provide this feeling, especially as the Frontier team still has to manually decide and inject community events and now PowerPlay interactions.

Evochron was another completely open universe, but it's joy is that it's completely seamless, and there are planetary landings, and a more "realistic" inertial flight model.

I want to like Elite, I really want to love this game and use my expensive peripherals (trackIR and Saitek x52 pro) but every time I pop on, I know I have a few basic options of "spaces" to inhabit -- complete emptiness, asteroid belts, stations, or Supercruise. Jumping between systems is just a series of loading screens, and even while exploring (I've done some big exploring trips), it almost feels like a dice roll... every 15 seconds, I get to roll the dice and MAYBE I'll see an unusual configuration of planets and stars.

Flying ships is awesome and the cockpits are gorgeous, but there's nothing to test my actual flying skills around--one can only do so many loops around asteroid belts, and duck into the geometry of a station so many times. I could spend hours simply driving a car around GTA, however, as there's a lot of stuff going on, and I have the freedom to seamlessly jump into the next activity as soon as I'd like.

Anyways, I hope to see this game continue to grow and become something engaging, but as it stands now, it eventually just isn't fun!

I know how you feel! It almost feels like going to a water park without any running water. Its got all of the slides and tubes, but nothing to use them for.
Thats eventually why I ended up joining a group. Now I feel like I can submerse myself in player lore, fight, trade, explore among other friendly pilots, and not feel so empty.

I would recommend finding a group or some people you can play with to try and take over a system, steal some gold, or make up your own lore in this nearly infinite universe!

Hopefully 1.3 will breathe some more life back into Elite too!

If you didn't by a dual monitor setup so you can watch TV or a film on your second monitor while you play ED then this game isnt for you.

ED is something that you play intermittently between gaps in your tv shows or adverts.

The core engine and mechanics are awesome. However, apparently the Devs find grinding to be great fun. I don't. Powerplay is just more mission grinding that is never-ending as your work/reputation decays quickly in real time, and that's on top of the existing trade/combat rank/etc. grind that already exists.

You know what I would find fun? They came close with the Unknown Artefact. People found them and tried to figure out what the puzzle was, but FD dropped the ball on that one as they're just a different looking canister that makes noises.

What if they made some new models (asteroid bases, giant derelict ships, places like Marvel's Knowhere, etc.) and scattered them around? Make each one have some clues or a story that when solved revealed a great reward, or a pointer to something else unique. Add some life to the empty universe. I think that would be awesome.

Remember when everyone was trying to solve what we thought was a scavenger hunt for the Titan Black? I had fun trying to figure it out. Too bad FD dropped the ball on that one too and called it a scavenger hunt when it was just a random placement. Remember everyone looking for the Seeking Luxuries ships near stations and flocking to them in droves?

I know I'm just rambling. I just hate the idea that all FD can come up with for this great engine is grinding missions. Forget that junk and put some cool stuff out there. Can you imagine the interest that would be generated if someone found a giant hulk of a derelict ship that pointed us out to some really good story or another interesting find?

You could make a lot more use of procedural content generation, despite the great universe setup FD has cooked up. There are quite a few games on the market, some of the even free, that have tremendous amount of variety because the mechanics are fairly complex and/or there is a huge amount of different items and creatures available for discovery and experimentation. Something similar applied to ED could definitely spice it up a lot. Maybe it will happen one day.
