I wanted to change my Power Play approach for this this week, and being pledged to Zachary Hudson, checked the Hudson Sub Reddit for best current tasks and tactics. Time for some Undermining down in the territory of that evil old biddy of the Empire: Zamina Torval. I set off from my home base of Nanomam in my trusty battered with peeling paint but essentially "A" Class Vulture. I had been directed to undermine a relatively high value target and chose somewhere I had never been before: Kappa Fornacis. I got down there and had to find a local system to base myself from. So far so predictable, nothing really out of the usual. Immersion at medium. Pulled into my chosen forward operating base: The Artemis System..
Then it all came home to me. It dawned on me that I HAD been here before...but no; No I hadn't, I had read about it, the "Laphrian Shipyard", and the asteroid belt base called "Freeholm" and a plucky girl pilot called "Julia"...... Of course!!!! This is the base and system for the book by Michael Brookes: Elite:Legacy.
.
Is Elite Dangerous fiction relevant? For me it certainly is. When I read Michael's book I enjoyed the background insight into the game from his unique perspective. This should be true of all the ED Authors I'm sure. It brought the Elite Dangerous "universe" alive for me as I flew through the system, it put meat on the bones of the game. It injected the characters and hiSTORY of Freeholm (the arrogant, conniving Empire) into the system I was now flying for myself. Immersion 110%
.
I've already bought my second paperback based on Elite Dangerous: "Reclamation" by Drew Wagar........ I look forward to reading it, and hope it adds as much to the game as Michael's book did!
