Elite melted my PC...

I just bought a shiny new Lakon 6, filled her up and went for a drive; was heading towards (but not at) the destination space station when my PC crashed; I mean REALLY crashed, no switching to windows, no alt-ctrl-delete - had to switch it off with the power button.

This happened to me in early Alpha´s (think 2.0 start, first logging, remember I had MP only after I had new disk, in 3.0).

I had Sidewinter, were loading game for first time, spinning ship..

My system just went black, dead, cold. After that I found out reason were broken hard drive (did not lose 3TB info because of Ubuntu and external HD).

Been wandering if 2.0 stressed my computer (I build myself) too far, as after that my power has informed that my GTX 680 needs all power, and cant connect to smaller external (old) screen anymore. I have 700-750 I think.

Do I dare to try OC DK2 when it arrives? :S:S:S:eek::eek::eek:

PS. Go Scotts! Take the first bullet so we will know what happens if we ever need to bail EU!

That i7-920 the op has is a hot beast ime, get a closed loop water cooler with a decent warranty, Corsair do make good if they leak replacing all components as necessary so do get a good brand with warranty from a reputable retailer.

The 920 can easily hit 4 ghz esp on the x58 mobo so look after it as its a very good cpu even today despite the age and power consumption and will hit just under 4ghz on stock voltage bring a huge increase in games performance IF and when needed.

Regarding the Vacuum cleaner for dusting a pc, its all I ever use and have cleaned a 700 watt psu out over 5 times in the last 7 years! Had I not done so I am certain it would have fried by now.

Ensure any pc you clean with a Vacuum cleaner is earthed as they can build static which will fry sensitive components!

the Hydro Series from Corsair are a good all in one water cooling solution

So I got the H100i and installed this morning. Just did a quick test before the install:

CPU resting temp: 40-43c
30 mins of Elite: max 84c (in a coolish room)

After install:

CPU resting temp: 32-33c
1hr of Elite: Max 44c (in a warm room)

Wow. So even in a warmer room and playing for longer it's waaaay cooler, Haven't tried it with a really cpu intensive activity yet, but that seems pretty positive!

one bit of advice though, take great care when cleaning internal fans as pushing the pipes aside can put a lot of strain on the mounts and they will break off.

apart from that, cool init? :D

You may be amused at my rig ...

Seven or so years ago I came into a little money and built what was for the time a monster rig... (£3 k or more, it cost ...)

Supermicro server board mobo, H8DCE, two dual core AMD opteron processors, 8 GB memory, WD raptor system disc, 4 other hdds, cant remember the gfx card but now GTX 260 (well out of date) and a second older gfx card.

So ott that it is still running now ...
It's in a massive Coolermaster case with (I believe) 6 x 120 mm fans plus the cpu fans and the psu fan.

As with my grandfather's axe it is and is not the same system I built.

The system disc has failed three times ?? and I have had two raptors then two SSDS.
The gfx card has been replaced at least once.
The PSU (original) failed a couple of months ago and I replaced it with a 760 w Corsair fully modular (I beleive) one guaranteed for 7 years.
The master sata channel on the mobo failed and this was replaced about 6 months ago with a plug in sata3 usb3 card.

it runs ED fine, albeit at a slightly slow frame rate (18 to 40 fps). Probably due to the old gfx card.

My plan is that the ssd drive is fine, the psu is new, the case is fine so in due course (when the mobo fails) I will replace the mobo, cpus, memory and gfx card (gtx 780 maybe ... ;-)) and I will have a nice new PC. None of this overclocking nonsense - go for two multicore processors ;-))

Basically that's why it has lasted so long and still performs ok:D

EDIT I should add I have built numerous other PCs, and always hoover them out every so often and have never had any issues. Carpet is a killer for systems and fills them with dust in no time (I keep servers in my garage and they get MUCH less dusty). The concrete floor is much better!

EDIT the second ... a chipset fan also failed a while ago and I got a little 40 mm replacement for a few pounds from ebay by comparing the pictures of the mounting and fixings ( I think the message I am getting is the mobo is on the way out ...)
