Community Event / Creation Elite Miniatures Battle Report. Elite Meet 2015

At Elite Meet, we managed to get a couple of games in. We couldn’t do a full tournament due to my late arrival thanks to accidents on the M6. Although there was a little stuttering on behalf of myself on the rules; it seemed that everyone enjoyed themselves and I’ll be able to revise it properly for the next go.

The scenario.

It’s a straight four way furball! There were four players, two players had one Cobra each and two had a pair of Sidewinders. Originally the plan was that the first two players to lose their ships would be eliminated with the remaining two going on to the next round. The Cobra pilots were rated Dangerous and the Sidewinder pilots were rated expert.

Skirmish One.

Cmdrs. Eid LeWeise, Pyskokow, Ed and Grey all lined up for the first skirmish. Cmdrs. Grey and Eid LeWeise got the sidewinders and Ed and Psykokow got the Cobras.

After a wobbly start where Cmdr. Ed almost crashed his cobra into the Asteroid field off the map, the first damaged was caused by Psykokow against Ben’s sidewinders. However, it was a glancing blow and Eid LeWeise repaid the favour with a couple of swipes of his own. Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the board, it seemed that Cmdr Grey and Cmdr Ed were pairing off against each other, with Cmdr Grey taking the risky move of putting all his power into weapons and firing as soon as he got in range.

Something must have been wrong with Ed’s pilot because even though he was shooting first, His shots went wide. The sidewinders got in a lucky couple of long range hits and were just as fortunate when they got in close next round. Cmdr Grey managed to inflict maximum damage on Ed’s Cobra (With some unbelievable lucky rolls it must be said) and poor Ed’s Cobra disappeared in a ball of flame into the void.
Meanwhile at the other end of the board. Eid LeWeise and Psykokow had engaged in, what can only be described as a, game of gentle ‘Tig’ and run away.
However, Darren decided to turn his attention to Ben’s sidewinders. Damaging one of them. This allowed Psykokow to finish that ship off.
At that point, we had to break. So Cmdrs. Grey and PsykoKow going through.

Skirmish Two.

Later on that evening, we had Cmdrs. Goose, Brumster, Selezen and myself because Cmdr Snoss had to drop out (Next time Mike ;-) ). Cmdrs Goose and Brumser took the Cobras, while Selezen and myself took the Sidewinders. (I demoted my pilots to competent, and boy do I wish I hadn’t). It seemed to start off with Cmdr. Brumster’s cobra attacking Selezen and Cmdr. Goose coming after me. First blood went to Cmdr. Brumster who damaged one of Selezen’s Sidewinder, with Cmdr Goose damaging one of mine.

This pattern quickly followed with one of my Sidewinders being blown apart by a Goose’s Cobra who’s had all his power thrown into weapons! Cmdr Selezen’s other damaged sidewinder didn’t fare much better, coming under a withering barrage from Cmdr. Brumster. Then in a surprise move, both the cobra commanders worked together to try and eliminate the remaining sidewinders.

Again Cmdr’s Goose’s fully powered weapons fired but by a miracle, my remaining sidewinder survived and managed to chip away at Cmdr Brumster’s shields, with a second set of shots from Cmdr Selezen wiping out his shields. But that didn’t help me as Goose fired off another round of shots and blasted my second sidewinder (With too much glee I hasten to add) and we had to finish there (due to time constraints and not a rage quit)
This meant that Cmdrs Goose and Brumster would have gone through.

The Final Scenario
Unfortunately, we couldn’t do the final because we ran out of time. The final scenario would have been a furball with each commander taking a ship dependant on how they did in the previous games. So we had a Cobra with two Missiles. A cobra with standard Guns, a Sidewinder with a missile and a standard sidewinder.

However, the twist would have been between turn three and five, An Elite rated Anaconda (the Silver Comet by Cmdr Grey’s permission) would have jumped in and started to devastate the other ships and the only way for the other pilots to survive would have been to work together.
Still always next time eh?

Lessons learnt.

The balance of ships is weighted slightly towards the Cobra’s (especially on the second game) so I think the cobra pilots will have to be downgraded to expert with the Sidewinders having one Competent and one master pilot instead. That should help balance the cobra’s abilities.

Cmdr Brumster made an excellent suggestion to modify the game cards to help with the power management and pilot cards will be available in addition to the ship cards (Thank to OneVigor for that suggestion). A paper sidewinder was handed out to most players. I think I owe one to cmdr’s Grey, Eid LeWeise and Psykokow.

It was a really good game, well done to you for putting it together. Once I'd done a few rounds and got the iist of the rules, I started to settle into it and enjoy it. "Flip 4!" FTW... :D

edit: you should call it the "FA-Off flip" y'know...

I thoroughly enjoyed the game and think it is a really good adaptation of the X-Wing rules. I actually thought that the comparison of the Cobra against the Sidewinders was quite accurate to the game. A cobra with a decent pilot would probably be a match for two sidewinders, and would probably take a decent amount of damage in the process - which is what happened.

One comment on the action report: i was pretty sure that one of my sidewinders was the first ship to be destroyed, not Colin's. Colin retained both Sidewinders until quite close to the end of the game. then my other Sidewinder took some hits, reducing it to 1 hull point and I had to run away whilst charging my shields, flying in a big circle around the attacking Cobra. Which all felt very very much like Elite. At one point I had Colin's Sidewinders in my sights, and he game me a nervous look when asking who I was attacking. I chose the high road and only attacked Cobras though.

All in all I think that the mods Colin made to the base X-Wing system worked very very well. I look forward to playing again. And I will treasure my Sidewinder model. I'm going to open it up and reinforce the inside before making a permanent, sturdy base for it.

Thanks for the chance to play, Colin, and I'm glad you made it home safe.

Thanks for the Feedback folks, that's it for v1.1.

Although I definitely can't be at LaveCon on the 11th, I do wonder if I can make it down for the 12th. I'll need to build up a LOT of Good Husband points to do that!

If that's the case, I'll bring Elite Miniatures v1.2 down with me then.

And we'll see if we can get the tournament going properly!

(Just so I can get the Anaconda out to murder you all! The FA-Off flip won't save you then Brumster!)

Really enjoyed that, was really easy to get into as well, even for a dudgeon like me who's never played X-Wing

The official name for that type of maneuver is a koiogran in star wars minis but the FA-Off flip has a nice ring to it :)

Yes, very easy to get into, and I had a lot of fun blowing up Ed's Cobra :D

One suggestion would be to have little round cards explaining the order of things - 1. choose flight manoeuvre, 2. assign power, 3. assign specials etc. I seemed to be the only one fiddling with power levels and focus things for much of the game, which I'm sure gave me a big advantage. If everyone had a little card reminding them of the order of decisions then I'm sure they'd remember better.
