Elite needs a deeper setting

Lore doesn't always have something to do with big sweeping changes and wars all over the verse. Sometimes its the simple things... like, if this world is experienced through my avatar, the Pilot, does he carry a side arm? if he does is it kinetic or thermal? do they make thermal weapons small enough? if its kinetic are there any safety precuations in place?

There are literally pages of that you can read in outfitting. People just can't be bothered reading it.

Yes I've read all that... but once you've read it once your done. Its not that much material. And its not really story or lore or even back story really.
I did find alot of the commodity descriptions cool, especially the rare goods explanations. More things like that about planets, stations, factions and systems would be great.

Ah sorry mate, just being 'orrible. I'm sure they are good really - they seem popular.

They're surprisingly good. I say that as someone who's normally wary of video game tie-in novelizations. I was expecting some cheap cash-ins, but ended up impressed, they could easily stand on their own as sci-fi novels.

I'd love to read the in game articles but I'm too busy grinding for wiring components... or was it mechanical heat? Ah, you get the point.

With all the mechanics, you could do some roleplay and create our own story. Saying what you do in the game and putting in a "book" contest.

For example, how I arrived at 17 Draconis and made huge donation of money for them. Or how I was a regular of Aditit, Ceos and Sothis to deliver there (literal)     ! :)

But that would require imagination! ;)

Please please please please. I mean, come on. Imagination? To play a game? You really are too much, sir. [wacko]

Imagination has been extinguished by the overuse of cinematic trailers.
Of course there needs to be ONE compelling story of how you got that free sidewinder (bonus if it contains Malcolm McDowell). Maybe two (need to fit Morgan Freeman in somehow), so you can decide.
But let's not give players unlimited possibilities to come up with their own background story!

:p

I know very little about the lore in elite and frankly it is a bit annoying much like hard work it is to get into the lore of the game. It is not easily accessible!

Problem we can't read history of elite universe in game. There is no background to anything and galnet have some good stuff but later its impossible to learn what happened before because the design and ui for galnet is really bad.

Second problem that nothing that happen in game never have any effect to anything. It doesn't matter at all if federation or empire win cg. Only info tab for that system may say federation instead Empire. Nothing changed in that system, because Empire and Federation are 99,9% same thing. Emperor died and we got new one. What changed? Nothing.

Federation, Empire and Alliance need to be different from each other, like federation navy/system security npc would only use federal ships and empire navy/system security npc only use empire ships, system security act different and use different lines when they message you, stations look different and laws be much more different than now. There is no difference between Sol, Archenar or Alioth. The major faction should effect game play so playing in Empire area would be different than on area that is under federation control not much different but so much that you would notice it.

That's why we have all those Farraguts and Majestic Interdictors all over the Pleiades.
Right.

You are sure you finished the half-pager that explained what those CGs were for and went there afterwards to check if something changed?

Because YOU don't see what's happening doesn't mean nothing is happening.
Heck, we found Jaque station! We found Sagitarrus! We found an Alien ship! And each time it created new stuff!
Right now we have a CG that is going to build outpost between the center of the Galaxy and the Human bubble. How can you say nothing is happening with something of that magnitude?

Totally agree with this. I would love to see the design team come up with some way to solve this problem. The problem basically is they can't pay people to do it as they'd either have to hire 100 people (each would have to write several thousand bios), or procedurally generate them (which will end up with all kinds of low-quality and weird stuff) or hand it over to the public, meaning we'd have to deal with anything from lore-unfriendly histories, to stupid troll histories everywhere we go...

I have been reading this thread with great interest. Plus I just purchased Elite Reclamation after hearing what people think of it. I look forward to starting it tonight, after a few CG runs.

Hidetaka Miyazaki the director of Dark souls showed us that with even the most obtuse and vague lore references, players; fans and content creators will run with it. Things don't need to be spelled out, or written out in big walls of text for people to read. Clues and unusual discoveries, things left open to interpretation often lead to more interest and discussion. I really loved the mystery of the UA, for me that was interesting. But some lore article buried on Galnet under bounty listings, news stories and the rest. A waste of the developers time imo.

I would however, love a codex. Or some tool we could use to read up on the various people, planets and factions in the game. Something that was on our ship, rather then only accessible in stations and outposts. Mostly because this is not the sort of information people can easily retain themselves.
