Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

Frontier have just confirmed in the PlayStation forum - after a year of speculation - that they have no plans to bring Odyssey natively to the PS5 or XBox Series X/S. Essentially this means they're not willing to invest any effort in current-gen architecture for the game on console and are only targeting the 8-year old PS4 and Xbox One.

The game will run on the current-gen consoles, but only in backwards compatibility mode, meaning any improvements available are limited to an unlocked frame rate and improved SSD R/W times. For example, playing Elite or Odyssey on the PS5 will offer a maximum resolution of 1080p.

The lack of investment in current architecture sends a clear message that Frontier do not view the console market as a worthwhile investment, outside of any sales they might pick up via existing players on the 8-year old PS4 and Xbox.

Why then, do we think they are delaying improvements to the PC version of Odyssey for the console release, when the console version of the game has just had it's death-knell sounded?

RIP Elite on console. You were always the unloved step-child.

Frontier's other IPs - including those recently announced like JW2 - are releasing native current-gen versions. It could be taken as evidence that we're reaching the end of development.
this right here is telling

I've always given FDev the benefit on this and was certain current gen will be looked at, not anymore
I'm now more inclined to believe that there really is no plans for current gen versions on the game
i'm also amazed that there are no plans to at least get PS5 up to 4k support

c'est la vie

I thought that young Arthur mentioned the reason; it has to run on old gen consoles because it's a DLC for a current game on said old console. Could it be a legal issue?
Also, why not develop an enhanced version in parallel? Resources and lack thereof?
I know some game who are on old gen and new gen. It's not a legal issue.
But he is right that it needs to run on old gen first. I mean, can you imagine the drama if console release was cancelled and went to new gen instead ?

While I am concerned Elite is reaching end of life, it’s clear FDev is swamped with the current platforms. It would be foolish to have any plans for PS5 other than a sticky note right now.

Sony was more mad at the fact CDProjeckt told people to get a refund without asking them first.
Sony lost money. They HATE to refund people.

They want to make sure the industry remembers the lesson.
But that's not the warning though... And yes I've seen that said before. Not saying you're wrong...

* "IMPORTANT NOTICE: Users continue to experience performance issues with this game. Purchase for use on ps4 systems not recommended. For the best Cyberpunk experience on PlayStation, play on Ps4 pro and ps5 systems." *

Urm, they announced this ages ago? But yeah, one of many reasons why I've stopped playing.

Plenty of other games out there willing to flex the power of both consoles.

They did, and lots of people in that thread tried to convince me that "no plans" meant they were actually planning to do it. Here we are a year later with confirmation that there are still "no plans".

Death knell.

OFC it's not the warning. "This company forced us to refund people and we are greedy" is accurate, but not very good for marketing.

Just like you don't see a lot of game accept Epic exclusivity program, and claim "it was all for the money".

Reality =/= what company says.

This is incorrect. There is absolutely no legal requirement for DLC to be available across generations. See e.g. Final Fantasy which has DLC only available on PS5.

This is a simple case of no inclination to invest in the platform.

Abandoned.
