Elite on tablets

Elite on tablets and mobile devices. (a look to the far far future)

Is it possible elite could some day be played on tablet PCs, take in mind the large scope of the game (aren't they hoping it will be around for a decade or something)?

How long will it be be until tablets are powerful enough to run elite; dangerous, (could it even be used someday on mobile phones)?

Considering windows 8 works on both tablets and desktops etc maybe it would be possible on release.

Would there be limitations on the controls and depth of the game on a tablet version?

erm..... discuss :)

why would you even want to? Perhaps there will be some sort of companion app, but beyond that, I don't ever want to feel that the game has been dumbed down to be compatible with tablets or phones.

I didn't read your post just the title, I say no way. Tablet version will harm the development of the console version. Tablets would spoil Elite as it was meant to be played. Tablet controls are used by babies with sticky fingers they wont be able to control a space ship by touch screen. I didn't back this project for tablets. For years people with tablets have their mobile games and camera apps exclusive to them, why should they have Elite also?

I think in a few years. Laptops tend to be 20% slower then PC so they are like a year two behind PC. Not sure about the tablets. Now a idea that came up was if you can view Prices on your tablet and maybe repairs on the ship and such. But no flying.

Now On the Older Elite games I wish they will make a tablet version.

Firstly, windows 8 runs only on PCs, a subset of those APIs runs on tablets and a subset of those with a few extra APIs runs on wp8 which is why some apps do not run on all systems and those that do need to be amended in order to run properly but you are right in that the core kernal is the same.

Anyway, to answer your question. I think that it will be about 10 years before you can run elite on a tablet but I do not think that many would want to since the control method would have to alter, maybe have two tablets, one as the viewer screen and the other as the input controller.

Instead of playing it on a tablet, why not read the books by pledging on http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fantasticbooks/official-elite-fiction-release-in-audio-and-print.

If ED really is a 10year project then you will be able to play it on your wris****ch at some point.

(Why is: noun, a watch worn on a strap round the wrist. Censored?

Edit: oh yeah... lol.

Scunthorpe works though..

If trends continue, then at some point in the next few years they are likely to be powerful enough to run the game. Not sure that they would be ideally suited for controlling the game though.

It also assumes that the tablet continues to be a popular form of mobile device. Perhaps in the future the tablet might be replaced by something like a Google Glass combined with something like Kinect gesture controls. Think of a 'Minority Report' style AR system.

Companion / Second Screen maybe?

I have a win8 tablet, runs full windows, not ideal for games, but during the few minutes approaching a station, maybe queuing to get in, I might like a second screen pulled up to scan the markets, find some deals / buyers etc.

I would ideally not want that overlaying the approach, as it would detract from the splendor of it.

Obviously, dual monitor would do, but, second screen (like Xbox Glass) or companion app would work great too.

(ironic on both counts)

It was just a look at where they might take elite in the future, i don't even own a tablet.

I am interested to see what they plan for elite after they have released the two main expansions.

If the technology were to advance enough they might not have to dumb it down at all, and imagine commuting somewhere, and being able to pull your phone out and play elite. :)

Wrong. You are describing Win 8 RT which was used on the initial MS Surface and other ARM tablets. The Surface Pro and some Windows tablets from other manufacturers use Intel processors and have a full version of Win 8 with all the relevant APIs. A decent spec Win 8 (Intel) tablet should be able to run ED now. You wouldn't want to try using it with touchscreen controls but with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse or joypad it should be playable.

To the original question, I'd say no. They tried to "consolify" the X series with X Rebirth, look what happened. Until proper controls (mouse and full keyboard) are common for "other devices", don't spend any development time on it at all. Also, the limited "usable resolution" would mean oversized gui with multi screens to accomplish the same thing as would be done on a single screen on a proper PC version. All games today with "console GUI" are horrible. I prefer good utilization of screen estate compared to fancy looking multi screen ones. We all know by now that developers are too "lazy" to implement unique GUI for PC versions.

Oh, with limited resolution I mean that even if you could have full HD on a 8"-10" display doesn't mean a system 8 pixel font would be readable on it. Just look at XCOM. Not that many lines of information, and they're still scrolling information vertically because of huuuge font size. Guess why that is...

Why didn't this thread turn into a storm of anger? Because no member really wanted a tablet version of Elite I suppose, so no member to attack and get the thread closed down.:(

Christ I hope not! A companion app tho could be cool. Bringing out a console version is dangerous enough in terms of simplifying controls and potentially cutting back to get it be financially viable with the costs of having on console.......... but running on a tablet with tablet controls? No thanks

No ludicrous claims were made about the capabilities of tablet PCs...

Xbox controllers presumably work with Windows 8 tablets, so if the hardware is powerful enough, there's not really much for Frontier to think about.
