Elite or GTA....

lol, just catching up with this Horizons news. what the are we doing poncing around in cars when Elite is a space combat sim?!

im sure it'll be great though....

Fd can we have some banks to rob on these planets like in GTA? maybe a PGA golf planet too? and a nurburgring racetrack - like in gran turismo?! might as well go the whole hog and give us a portal gun too or a post apocalyptic planet with a city called meagton, so we can do lots of other stuff entirely unrelated to what elite is about.

can't wait!

Elite is not just a space ship sim. Perhaps the first iteration was, but I believe FD wish this space that they created to be a platform to publish many sci-fi games. Much like apple in hardware created the touch market as a platform to publish their own things.

I think this is FD's vision, or at least part of it...

I'm just going to have fun jumping dunes and tumbling down canyons in my scarab. Set up a nice little mining operation and shoot down anything that dares fly over head.

"GET OFF MY LAWN YOU SPACE JUNKIES"

Golf in non-gravity sounds like a challenge, any planets named after golf courses in ED ?

Definitely an idea for season 18.

Planetary landings without ground vehicles would have been ridiculous.. Were we supposed to travel everywhere on foot? Or perhaps head back to our ship to fly 20km to another site? Moons and planets are to scale - ie huge.. I'll be using my ship to travel hundreds/thousands of km's over the surface, and stick to vehicles for exploring specific regions

Perhaps they'll put in some racing and maybe some kind of buggyball tournaments like the game Rocket League - a spare escape pod should suffice as a ball.

I can imagine having to infiltrate a secret mining base in your Scarab, first entering a tunnel and using your on-board laser to take out the shield generator. Then you and a wingmate (in a nimble craft like en Eagle) would work together to take out the air and ground defences, and open the storage bay - whereupon another wingmate in a Type 9 would deploy collector drones to empty the base of it's valuables.

Or how about multi-part missions:
Start on planet A, trying to retrieve a stolen piece of tech from a pirate base
Continue in space, encountering those same band of pirates, who also patrol the system and who will follow you through Hyperspace to your eventual destination if necessary, in order to stop you returning the item.
End up on planet B, where the item was originally stolen from.
(Or you might have accepted the pirate's lucrative offer to buy back the item before you started shooting!)

Then there's the surveying/exploration/prospecting stuff.

There's a lot of good things you could do, even with airless planets - I am willing to wait and see what they reveal in the coming months, rather than going straight into "OMG FRONTIER ARE THIEVES" mode.

I don't agree with you...and neither does David himself. ;)

...I have never seen Elite as (just) a space trading game - it is way more than that - even though I realise this is how it has been classified since...

Old comment but still true.

The Elite of my dreams is and have always been a "sci fi simulator" with a full galaxy to explore all the way from a galactic overview down to individual rocks on a planet. How we explore depends on the environments in question. Exploring the planets through vehicles and eventually on foot is just a natural progression from what we saw in Frontier many years ago. :)

Heck...driving around on planets in "Elite 4" was talked about by David waaaaaaaaay back.
