Read First Elite posts on Reddit and vote-canvassing

An issue has been raised in particular on /r/Games on Reddit about people linking to Reddit posts and asking for upvotes. This is actively harmful, as it breaks Reddit rules and results in these posts being deleted. Apparently people got extremely passionate about this sort of spamming during the Kickstarter and as a result mods are overtly suspicious of Elite: Dangerous threads, watching carefully for linking in and upvotes from members with no activity. Since almost every post gets some of this it means all ED posts are getting deleted. This is resulting in effectively a near blanket ban on Elite: Dangerous discussion in one of the top Reddit gaming communities. Not good!

The only way to break this is to change community behaviour. As such please respect the following:
  • Do not post links to Reddit asking for upvotes.
  • Do not vote up things on Reddit if you're not an active member of that community already.
  • If you see others asking for votes tell them to stop and tell them why.
  • Go join Reddit, and join the Elite: Dangerous group on there, and join other groups that interest you. Vote and comment on things that interest you. By actively participating in /r/Games threads you will demonstrate that you are not a fake account used for mass-voting-up threads.
  • Respect that Reddit is a community site, not a marketing and promotion tool.
  • If you've blindly spammed or voted on things before then go say sorry and that you'll change your ways! People tend to respond well to niceties :)
I know everyone's passionate about the game and wants the word to get out, but spamming other sites can sometimes generate a negative backlash, so please be mindful in your internet wanderings!

Wut :S

I just think if you're willing to come here and say this community (Yes, I know I'm new) has done/keeps doing something and you're asked how you know this as fact, you should at least be able to say how you're so sure it's a member/members of this forum.

Am sticking this thread for a while.

Guys (and Gals), those of you who use reddit, shouldn't group-up in mass to do up-vote brigading. It's not good for us as a community, as it causes a void on a very large social networking site. As the moderators there see that and will have greater scrutiny upon any E: D submissions. :)

While most of you guys are excited as we are, we want to stress to you to not violate other websites rules and guidelines, such as reddit's reddiquette.

Thanks for understanding! :)

I think Darren was attempting to question everything :p

I take the point that we the only way to prove the allegation would be through harmful naming-and-shaming, but even if people reading this weren't part of the problem, they have an opportunity to become part of the solution.

Yes. This isn't the time for conspiracies. This is a serious issue. ED members have been naughty and we have to accept that.

No, we have to accept that moderators claim that ED community engaging in vote manipulation all the time. We can't verify their facts. We can't remove these accusations. Because it's their word and that's it.

So we will shame part of community here which I will guess have never done anything on reddit, or even don't know what's reddit is, including what's vote manipulation. That's classy.

/r/Games mods are engaged to make example of ED, their article about ED as example of massive VM during KS is shiny example. Please don't look for objectivity there.

I do remember a "call to arms" during the KS asking for people to make an account and upvote threads, something that I willingly did, and I think since then I have perhaps made a couple more posts and that's it. Not really been there much since as (sadly) I don't understand that forum .. it's all gobbledygook to me

That said I agree - naming and shaming people doesn't work as it divides the community and worse alienates those that don't realise it's a problem. If FD really are bothered by this then perhaps they should speak to the Reddit admins to see if they can match account names / email address's of those who are causing a problem and sort it out internally.

just a reminder that /r/games is one of many different subreddits. If the mod policy is heavy handed (mods of subreddits are NOT employees of the company, they are just enthusiasts). There is zero impartiality on any mod-team, only their rules and their interpretation of reddiquette.

Whilst some positive action is required to regain the trust of the mod team there, it seems a bit late in the day, the mod team have their reasons, and will stick to them, rightly or wrongly.

Accusations about violations during KS are valid, we all know that.

But claims about recent posts being VM are really getting me.

I personally couldnt give a damn about Reddit I went there once or twice during the Kickstarter and was singularly unimpressed so much so that I actively avoid it now. Once ED comes out its quality will speak for itself, we dont have to 'sell it' anymore now the Kickstarter has been successful.

Reddit is far too clunky and unwieldy for my tastes. I avoid it like the plague.

I prefer this type of forum.

And I agree. Elite Dangerous will sell itself.

Post to r/pcgaming instead, or r/gaming, and of course r/EliteDangerous if you're an active user, otherwise don't. The r/games mods seem a tad too authoritarian to me. This is from a search of ED on r/games;

Really doesn't look fishy at all. Capital ship video being top voted is no surprise, it's the biggest/longest video of ED game play before the alpha release.

I always wondered why I never saw ED news on reddit, and this is why. But yeah, no point bothering with r/games if some jerkwad decides he has a vendetta because of an incident 1 year ago.

Is the potential social network marketing on a subreddit so valuable that this really needs to be addressed to all? If the fate of this game rests on the blog posts from a subreddit dominated by 14 year olds I think ED has much bigger problems. Besides if there is direct evidence that it was done by an ED member then it can be addressed to them directly no? The alpha is already selling itself, just wait till the beta and the subsequent release. I don't remember the last time I checked r/games to see what bad ass space sim I wanted to buy. They can go f*** a duck while I go FAOFF!

I have no idea what reddit is. Maybe that's a good thing.
I don't think a game developer should worry about what is going on in another website. It implies a lack of confidence in the product.

Surely once the game picks up some momentum, and a significant number of established redditors are playing and posting about the game, then this silliness will stop? I've got no intention to start using reddit, so that I can somehow use time spent over there as leverage to 'genuinely' upvote Elite. To be honest, it sounds pretty much like a fake account once-removed.
