What about a new game mode?

Many MMOG offer some sort of arena or battleground to cater for the players darkest passions -> PVP!

Let's say there is a limited space of 10 systems where 2 factions battle for supremacy.
Rest of the galaxy is off limits. Greyed out or just not accessible.

Player's choose one side (Federation or Empire) and fight for their glory.
NPC ships only spawn military vessels belonging to either side. No pirates/traders/neutrals etc..

After a certain amount of NPC or Player vessels killed a event would be triggered.
Which would result in spawning capital ships which will be battling out who will control that system.
So systems can change allegiance.
Different systems could earn different points depending on importance.
After a set period of time, reaching certain amount of points or the capture of a certain system the winning side should be declared.
Or maybe eternal war with no ending? Don't know what people would prefer.

There would be no mining, no exploration nor trading. Just pvp.
The player's rank would determine the ship class available for duty.
Bounties could be used to upgrade your modules of course. The amount should be depending on the rank.

What do you guys think? Heresy or acceptable playmode?

No, a shut-off PvP area isn't the solution. Tweak around with conflict zones, enable better grouping, give the means for players to organise such things themselves within the game as it stands YES, but not a totally separate game mode.

The factions system will probably take care of this in the long run - there'll be plenty of flashpoints popping up for PvP and it'll fit the galactic lore. No need to force it.

On the other hand, I'd fully support an Imperial Coliseum and gladiatorial games.

A spot of blood sport is jolly smashing fun! And it’s good for the digestion as well.

This kind of goes against the nature of the game tbh.

If you want arena style gameplay maybe try Star Citizen instead.

No - no magic shut off pvp zones. Key word here is SIMULATION. Keep the game world as logically consistent as possible.

Like Rall says though - Imperial Coliseum - thats a pretty groovy idea!

But wouldn't it result in less griefing? Hardcore pvpers would prefer that over searching or camping at anarchy systems for some poor soul...
There are even player groups with 1000+ players who shut themselves out of open world because of griefers.
I think 1000+ players more in open world would be nice.

And the option for instant pvp to test setups or tactics are not bad, too.
Or even just for the fun of fast insta action.

Burn the witch! J/K.

Seriously though, the general idea is to provide conflict zones that occur naturally, like in a living universe. Game play modes like this comes on the outside of that basic principle. It belongs more in that start up menu with the tutorials. And in fact, that is where to place it, if ever implemented. Like a PvP tutorial perhaps? In the world as it stands, we must have continuity, and a logic to every action that feels like a part of the environment, as opposed to a mode that is entered, for its own sake.

Elite Dangerous is more akin to a simulator than a MMORPG, so everything should be as seamless as possible, and connected to what is going on in the rest of the universe. For in a way, some specific arena set aside with separate rules, is bypassing the effort to create otherwise more fluid events of universal interest, linked to the unfolding story of the Galaxy as we know it. Thus there should be no "static stages", more like a river of flowing action. One thing leading to another, always a part of the greater whole.

Hm. Starting to sound like Leoben. Not good...

I'd be interested to participate any meaningful PvP. If someone objects - they can play solo or just avoid said PvP mode. Good idea OP.

Might as well be that or some underground pit fights between convicts, gangs, mercenary companies. Liandri mining corporation anyone? :D In any case those nosy Imperials sure know how to get some proper fun so I don't turn from possibility of gladiatorial games either.

If you want a pvp battleground, just choose a location and start encouraging others who want to pvp to turn up.

Perhaps it will snowball and become the goto place for a spot of pvp action.

You might want to pick an anarchy system btw ;)

Well, every time someone wants to pvp he has to start a thread when and where he will wait then? :)

Exactly, why lose players to SC?

I don't think we will see meaningful pvp in open world.
Why? This galaxy is just too huge. (I love it though!)

So pvp will end in the starting areas, ganking/griefing newbie players.

PvP zones are supposed to be created in areas of conflict, where you pick a side. Such places are limited both in time and space, and does not fall under the umbrella of being lost in the infinite universe. Instead of a fixed arena, you have temporary arenas, in a sense. Obviously work in progress. And you obviously have to go there. But that is as far as I know, how we do it in this game.

Okay, with mixed PvE in there. Granted.

Too artificial. Warzones and all other places are fine. To create a pvp arena is just weird in ED. Unless its a battle to the death arena in a Thargoid system. Na na naa naa naa naa naa na na naaaaa na! *star trek 60's battle theme*. :D

When we get to walk around stations they should have VR arenas where you and other pilots can go head to head or group battles for training or fun, simply land at station make way to arena arcade pick your ship and load out and off you go.

Would actually make good entertainment for people to watch from the bars at the stations, maybe make a punt or 2 on who wins?
