I don't think anyone had really optimized their modules back then anyway. Top speeds always seemed close to 840ish but damn that PD! Running out of boosts would make a difference during those ring turns!

FA off times like the current ones would almost be the same with lesser thrusters, but not possible without almost permaboost.

Not sure on that... You really need the thrusters to be effective as possible to maximise steering the boosts in the turns. No way you'd want lesser thrusters with FA off.
