Elite rig for the future

I've seen alot of threads about rigs , and was part of one that helped me slot getting my first gaming rig,,,,

I'm disappointed in her at all she's a great machine,,, but

I'm looking for a long term build backup rig ,,, now I have plenty of time this is the future,,,, I have no idea what's good bad , ugly,
I have noticed alot of build your own sights where you select your build, but what's the right combination,

So if you guys with the knowing , can hit me with specs to big the ultimate Elite pc, and not saying to run it , or better said what's your ultimate pc,,,

Say within a £2000 budget ,

I would wait for the next generation gfx cards to come out in about 9 months ( something like the nvidia Maxwell cards but using 20nm tech rather than the 28nm in the 1st generation cards) and get the most powerful cpu to go with it and a suitable motherboard etc. (min 32Gb ram and 64 bit OS and SSD drives).

I can give general pointers - specific prices.. well, the optimum varies almost month-by-month.
Also, while a rig just for elite would be interesting, let's assume that you want enough heft to handle other (more demanding) games too ;)

CPU:
I'll go against the traditional wisdom, and say that from 2014 onwards, you really do need at least a quadcore, if not a six/eightcore. New games like Thief already show that multicore games are being developed, and the new console gen is heavily multicored... (So, something like an i7 4700HQ / AMD fx 8350).

Ram - well.. it ain't ever gonna get as cheap as it was 2 years ago, thanks to a fire in a major ram-component production facility somewhere in Asia. So 8 or 16 gigs would be enough.

Graphics cards are kind of in a slump. I literally looked at some possibilities to deck out a system a few hours ago out of interest (hadn't paid much attention to desktop components in a while), and.. Eh. The current notion is that price/performance wise, good bets are nvidia's 770 or amd's r9 270 (if you pick this, go for the 4gb version). But honestly, now is a bad time to buy these, so wait until autumn/winter, when the new cards come out. Either those will be good, or the current ones will drop in price.

SSD's - still expensive, but vital for making the computer snappy. I'd go for an intel ssd just for security's sake - they have pretty solid reliability and good quality control, afaik.

One note - set aside something like a hundred quid for an audio card, and 100/200 more for an audio system. People often ignore this and they are missing out on a lot.

Have to say waiting is hurting... my current rig really suffers on Alpha 3, getting 15 fps on low at 720p...

... just hoping beta optimising helps

But right now is a terrible time to buy, new CPU on the way and NVidia new card will be out around gamma time (thinking October/September)... launch hitting xmas time which is traditionally the gold period for game releases.

I am also banking that the planetary landing addon will also require some extra muscle so I'm going to future proof as much as possible, by blowing about 2.5k on just the box, save up for triple monitor after that.

Although OR could be a possibility, not sure I could cope with the marathon gaming sessions with a headset on..

Sorry to the op for hijacking the thread but want to ask Breakpointuk a question.

I noticed that in another thread you were thinking of getting the below rig, is it this system that is giving such low performance?

CPU Overclocking: 4.3Ghz - Extreme Overclock
CPU: NEW! Intel Core i7 4820K Extreme
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i Extreme Water Cooler
Operating System: Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
Motherboard: Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme
RAM: NEW! 16GB Corsair 2133mhz Vengeance Pro (2x8GB)
Hard Drive: NEW! Corsair 240GB Neutron GTX SSD
Additional Storage: 2TB S-ATAIII 6.0Gb/s
Optical Drive: 10x Blu-Ray RW S-ATA
Graphics card: NEW! NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB
Sound card: Onboard 7.1 Audio
Internet: Wireless 802.11N 300Mbps MIMO PCI card
Case: Corsair Graphite 600T
PSU: NEW! 860W Corsair Rm digital Fully Modular

If it's for the future, don't buy it until you need it.

Best advice, and has always been true except for some very specific components/situations.

Now, what you need for a £2k Elite rig:

Motherboard
CPU
CPU Cooler
RAM
GPU (or more than one)
SSD
HDD
Soundcard (yes, it is a different experience)
PSU
Case

As I don't know if you are including external devices in the config (monitor, OR, keyboard, mouse and joystick), it is a bit harder to say something about options to take. And whats best depends on the price you get stuff (location,...) and your personal preferences.

That said the stated amount is enough for a very nice system. I almost could afford mine with that :p

Anyway, my *probable* current pick:
Motherboard: MSI GD 65
CPU: intel 4770k
RAM: 2x8GB Trident X 2400 DDR3
GPU (or more than one): R9 290X (in Europe) with custom cooler - R9 290X WindForce OC for example
SSD: 240GB Samsung 840 EVO
HDD: 3TB Seagate Sata 6gb
Soundcard: Sould Blaster Z
PSU: Corsair 650W + - e.g. TX 750 or similarly good brands
Case: Nanoxia DS 2, Fractal Design Desire XL, Corsair 750D, all depending on available space.

Hi Flavio,

I didn't end up getting the above rig, seeing the how the release schedule for ED has been extended from the original estimate I have decided to hang back for as long as possible.

The above rig will run ED extremely well, a few community members have similar specs, and report a really great performance.

My current rig is..

2.4 Quadcore AMD
Geforce 540gt 2gb
12gb Ram

Although playing Alpha ED is pretty terrible on my rig, I have a feeling that ED's requirements (for Ultra quality) are going to increase by the time we get to the initial release, even more so when the expansions get released. I would rather wait and get more for my money.

I dont really play anything else on PC (mainly use consoles), although I will getting Elderscrolls Online (i've preordered the imperial edition) for PC as the beta ran really well at 1080p.
