Elite / Frontier Elite - The film.

Ok, we've seen space games turned into films before, with the likes of Wing Commander, Doom, etc.
Some not to bad, if you are a fan of the game, I particularly liked Wing Commander, though it's reviews were somewhat bad.

Perhaps when Elite 4 is released, and it sells millions (you never know) a film company might contact DB for film rights based on the game.
If Wing Commander can produce a film, i'm sure Elite could :)

What would you like to see in the film if it was a reality?
And would DB direct it aka Chris Roberts hehe.

Meh - I want to see an Elite movie like I want to see Uwe Boll direct another movie. The only person that I would allow near it would be Peter Jackson.

I think because Elite is your own game and your own story, having someone reduce it into a story line would kinda kill the game involvement for me.

I dunno,
The Novel 'The Dark Wheel' from the original Elite did not take anything away from the game for me.
As for Peter Jackson, I could not see that happening anytime soon, very talented man, but would only Produce/Direct a blockbuster.
It would be every Elite fans dream though.

It is from the The Dark Wheel though, that my post is geared towards.
Though the novel was ok, so much more could be done, with a little imagination. The Thargoid Wars perhaps!?!
A film could be based on that, would detract nothing from the forthcomming Elite 4 for me.

It's just a pipe dream from an Elite fan, thats all, and not to be taken seriously.

They say Games and Films are increasingly going hand in hand with each other, with more films being made based on games as time goes on. The one I would most like to see would be an Elite Movie, as the follow up games had so much scope and freedom, there would be literally hundreds of ideas this game could muster, to be turned into the big screen.

I dunno - for a major movie house to sponsor a movie then the game would've had to be a real hit so getting Peter J to look at it might not be too much of a pipe dream :) The Dark Wheel was alright I guess and provided a bit of a vehicle for imgination. With what E4 could potentially be and the scope that is possible in the games of today, don't you think it might be quite hard to give enough scope to a movie?

What would the premise be? A trader getting embroiled in some sort of an adventure? Someone who is an Officer or a Prince in the various factions with the Elite universe? Thargoid wars?

We've seen the mess that was the 3 subsequent Starwars movies and how easy it is to destroy the brilliant feeling of grandure presented in Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back - It strikes me as quite a difficult genre to give justification to.

Like you I love to see renditions of a game bought into the 'movie reality' but rarely have I ever seen it done well.

Birth of the Empire for the first, with Empire/Fed wars as the main set piece battle, probably with Thargoids in there causing trouble. Thargoid wars in the sequel, with underlying tensions between the Empire/Fed. The final movie would be mankind working together to destroy the Thargoid homebase.

To be honest, I think a tv series would be better - almost a soap opera in space. It would be cheaper than produce, as even High Def has a much lower resolution than film, and therefore effects processing is cheaper.

Have there been any recent movies of space games? The effects in the latest generation of movies is demonstrative of how good things are now. The essential requirements are a director with a good visions and an artist capable of interpreting the vision.

WOOO trilogy LOL - Do you think that there'd be a group of characters introduced from the start or do you think we'd follow Jameson from a sort of Han Solo position from dodgey trader guy working his way up in the Federation or Empire? The unfortunate thing with a movie like this is that we'd have to have someone to associate with and use as a vehicle to carry the movie along. In the game there has never been an underlying plot - which was great because it allowed the player to define their own story and life. It would be quite cool to use some of the Dark Wheel material (will have to re-read it again) and have some Targoid interaction.

Yeah, I've been watching Battlestar Galactica religeously and watched all of Babylon 5 - awsome. Agreed - an Elite series would be stunning - esp considering what BSG looks like.

Totally - someone with some real feeling for scope - IMO the think that really killed the Starwars Movies was the loss of feeling in distance (interstellar), and the feeling of darkness - The bad guys were a little too ambiguous (not including Darth Maul of course) - They are fundamentally fantasy movies and bad guys should have big black suits with nasty bad guy lackies :)

We'll ignore for the moment that Lucas is a crap director, the script was rubbish, Hayden Christensen was a whining little child that second only to Keanu Reeves in woodeness, the art department missed the target completely (IMO everything was too clean) and we won't even touch Jar Jar!

Wish I was good at making these short CGI films you see on the web, it would inspire me to do a CGI adaptation of the Dark Wheel, even if it came in chapters, rather than the whole kaboodle in 1 go.

Any avid computer graphics people want to take up the challenge that read this forum :)

Mind you, could it be done without copyright issues?

Ideally, it would be more original than that - perhaps with Jameson but running with the parallel Empire v Fed storyline. Anyone where can I get the Dark Wheel from? I have always wanted to read it, and I might pick up the urge to actually finish a screenplay.

You're right on a number of levels. Psychologists have done studies and shown that young adult men are likely to join gangs/cultures where dark/stark colours are predominant. This is why the **** party was so successful in its recruiting among the beer halls, even though the others (such as the communists) were less successful. The uniforms (even the brown ones) gave them a sense of identity that appealed to their more violent tendancies.

Definitely, the original SWs movies were great because of the fact that looked as if it had done several rounds in a with Mike Tyson when he hadn't been fed in a week.

Certainly not, this is a family-friendly website where we don't engage in that kind of behaviour

Well, I have started tinkering with 3D packages such Vue Esprit and Terragen (both landscape creation programmes) and am reasonably comfortable with Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects (bought the Adobe suite, with great concern from my wife). Maybe a team-based (creative commons) approach? ;)

No chance at all (legally) without copywrite holders' permission. However, the effort of taking an individual to court over a small movie for a game is not worth it.

http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/dkwheel.htm

It's online, but you could print it off.

I'd love to help you, I really would, but my knowledge of using graphics programs, is the equivalent of a monkey trying to write a Shakespear play.

FFE Fan fic: The HPA Saaaargha

If you still didn't, try this one for size:

http://www.hughesd.co.uk/elite/content/fiction-hpa1.asp

It contains the first HPA Saaaargha, a fanfic made in the alioth.net EBBS. IMO it could very well be made into a movie - then again, it might not on account of all the people involved...
If you liked it, there are in the same site two past prologues for some of the characters and the ongoing HPA2 saga, that goes a little off the normal FFE universe, but not too akwardly so.
