This may be of interest to some... In the recent Seven Day Roguelike Challenge (make a procedural game with permadeath in 7 days) someone made an adaptation of Elite in roguelike form. Here's what it looks like:
The @ is the ship and the green and red dots are the station (the green dots being the docking section you have to aim for). Further details and download:

Plays a bit weird, but it's quite an amazing effort to reproduce Elite with ASCII graphics.
Also I would be remiss not to mention that I made a seven day roguelike myself. Called Mosaic, it's a game in which you try to surround the map and enemies in colourful tiles. It procedural generated music based on where the map tiles are laid.
