Fiction Elite Universe in General

Hi. I'm new to the Elite series. I'm really loving the game. I'm not really a full-on role player, but I do like to care a little about my actions. As a result, I want to find sources for the answers to questions like:

Who are the Alliance, Federation, Empire etc?
What's going on right now in the elite universe on a large scale (I.E. Eranin conflict-type things)?

Where is everyone? The bubble we had in Beta 1 was pretty well populated everywhere. Almost everywhere had stations and NPCs, etc. Now that we have this massive pill I'm coming across a lot of systems that are just plain-old empty. I expect that, because 400 Billion stars is a lot for mankind to populate. However, I imagine people are concentrated in pockets perhaps based on a high concentration of earth-like planets or valuable ores. Is this true, or are we facing a mostly empty galaxy after we move significantly far from Sol (I'm sure there will be things hiding out there for us)? I imagine there are sources for what are the more densely populated areas of the galaxy.

These are the kinds of things I'm interested in. By the looks of things a lot of the fiction deals with one specific person or event, and while I intend to get there I'd like the broad strokes first. Can someone point me to a place where I can get my feet wet?

Thanks!

P.S. Sorry for the ramble :)

Also make sure to visit Elite Expanded Universe website, it's a mine of knowledge about the lore. There also wiki pages: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Main_Page and http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/

Ummm... Yes they do, but apart from the wikia, which is a great starting point they also have a large amount of non official information.

Both the Alioth site and Dave's daftworks site were really helpful in developing the official work, but they are not official and go in different directions with the history than the official canon, which is Frontier's to publish when they are ready to do so.

Better sites to start with are these ones - http://lotf.co.uk/lib.html and http://www.dream-ware.co.uk/first-encounters/journals (which appears to be down).

the 3 factions

Hi Dublicious.

Worth checking out the latest Lave Radio episode. Chris Jarvis and I talk through the qualities of the three factions and their flavour. http://laveradio.com/podcasts/laveradio-ep38.mp3

That was pretty helpfull, so basically it is about Capitalism, Federation corperate multistellars, empire aristocratic/oligarchy with slaves which are actually middle ages servs., and Alliance Coöperations of several groups. So basically all 3 are in a Hermetic order, so I wonder if the aliens are the illuminati controlling all three factions secretly. ;o)

And a bit of propaganda from the storyteller leaning towards the Empire, and basically describing that their's is no slavery.
In the description they are servs, and servs had the right to own property but were still not free to move. So they are robber barons in the Empire.

The thing is, no religious influence seems to take part of this all. Or maybe later?

There are religions upheld by certain populations, but mostly they have been abandoned - or at least they were in Frontier Elite 2 and Frontier First Encounters. Haven't seen anything saying that they might be back, but I could be wrong.

One of the system information filters in the Galaxy Map is 'Theocracy' so I think it'd be safe to assume religion isn't entirely consigned to history in the Elite Dangerous universe!

Thanks to everyone who's replied so far. Reading some of these resources and seeing the conversation is interesting and helping me get a little more into the world of Elite.

I suppose that keeping religion out of it is a purposeful and correct decision by the ED developers. I suppose the only odd thing would be for Muslims having to basically pray in the direction of Terra, just because we've spread out around a teeny tiny bit of the galaxy does not mean religions are going to go the way of the dodo.
