After getting my Vive last weekend, I've finally been able to get a solid Elite session going today. I'm playing in the beta, so decided to try out a few different ships, and was blown away by just how much I fell in love with them all.
I've been enjoying Elite for a couple years, and felt quite attached to one or two of my favourite ships (my trusty Asp Explorer, and my beautiful iClipper). But that's nothing to how I felt when I got into the VR cockpit of a tiny Eagle! Which, of course, turns out to not be so tiny after all.
I don't know what it is exactly, but that thing was a joy to fly around in — even when I wasn't actually *doing* anything. I just loved being in that ship. I then tried a few more out, and the feeling of pure joy continued, even though the station I was at only had what I had previously thought of as "meh" ships. The Type 7 was still this MASSIVE chunk of metal, but those rusty industrial surfaces became so damn appealing in VR. And then I tried a Hauler, thinking that nothing could make me love that awful cockpit, and was amazed by how spacious it was and how big those 'little' windows really are.
This whole game has suddenly become a lot more personal, and I can't imagine ever playing it in non-VR ever again. A massive thank you to the FD guys for creating something that works so well here.
