So i have elite dangerous horizons for steam. Is it possible for me to be able to get the VR version on the oculus without paying for another copy?

Simple answer is yes.

I think you can ask FD support for a code, which you have to pass to Oculus. There are various threads in both Elite and Oculus forums.

I've not more details as I can't get at my machine currently.

Why bother, there is no VR version, there is only 1 version and it supports VR. You may need to change a setting in the oculus software to allow software from other sources to use VR is all.

Yeah, just switch it to VR mode in game, and it works. You don't need to launch Elite via Oculus home. I've only ever used the ED launcher.

From the Oculus software goto settings/general/unknown sources

From Elite client goto options/graphics/3D/HMD (headphones)

From the little speaker icon on your tray leftclick the icon, leftclick the up symbol, leftclick headphones (rift audio)

Huh... okay, building on this, I recently got a windows mixed reality headset, but unfortunately recently got a Steam Key and set it up to run through Steam VR anticipating getting it and thinking I needed it.

Are you saying I could just run it through the WMR alone? I had heard that before, but it seems like I can't undo what I did. I tried running the desktop launcher (sans Steam) and Steam VR loads up regardless.

I got nothing against Steam (plenty of other games I'll want to play with it), but having both the Cliff House and Steam VR house running in the background is a waste of resources. How can I undo this?

Sounds similar to launching with VR if you have Oculus.
As soon as you switch to VR in Elite, the Oculus launcher fires up also. Just ignore it. It's required to run VR bit. You can't run in VR without it.
There are ways of disabling/enabling the VR if you want to run in 2D only, but it's easier to just change game setting in Elite game as you need it.

WMR is still pretty new so it might actually need to use steamvr as a wrapper for it to work, havnt investigated it since ive got a vive tho.

You can disable steamvr home in the settings menu, i do that even on my vive to maximize performance since otherwise it stays loaded in the background and causes additional lag when things get intense ingame.

Yeah, I've managed to minimize as many things as possible to maximize performance (so no more of that second house to navigate). Also found a number of helpful settings tweaks to SteamVR as well.

You're right about WMR being new, but I had misunderstood what was being said here. I thought someone said ED supported VR natively without the need for Occulus or Steam software running.

Hopefully they'll add native WMR support in the near future.

I think Elite does support VR natively as long as the tracking data is recognized properly, back when the oculus beta runtime was the thing we used to play the HMDs themselves worked like any other secondary monitor, Elite was displayed on it like a window on another screen, split down the middle to for sterescopic 3d and with the positional input from the HMD it gave a user experience just like now.

This ^^^

I have ED Steam version. Don't start Steam or Steam VR. Just start Oculus Home and then ED from the launcher.

ED support vr natively yes.
But supporting vr natively does not mean it can run on the game singularly.
All the vr abstraction, like hmd rendering specifics, lens distortions and tracking etc is managed by the steamvr software or the oculus software.

Without these you might as well unplug the hmd, it will not work without this depending software running.

Since games and experiences doesn't have to talk directly too the vr hardware developers can focus on the game. not building drivers and debugging tracking issues.
Especially now when we are not talking about just two hmd's.

Oculus only has the one yet, but that will change eventually.
Steamvr is now handling two vive units, and a multitude of WMR units. Without steamvr to handle the differences, each and every hmd would have to be added to each game by the developer to a minute level.

By "supporting Vr" the devs really mean they support the oculus and/or steamvr runtime software.
Plenty of titles only support one, meaning one runtime need to be layered on another.
Now steamvr works practically natively with oculus, so playing a steamvr game on rift means both software's need to be running.
For the other way around you need something like re-vive to add steamvr support to oculus since they are a stubborn bunch.

Thanks for the clarification. Since Microsoft is running a number of popular games best suited for VR (Superhot, Arizona Sunshine, others) hopefully they will eventually do Elite Dangerous as well. I mean, it's a poster child for VR in many ways!
